While the western part of India is busy celebrating Navratri, the eastern part is gearing up to welcome goddess Durga. It’s no wonder that the Indian television and our Bollywood films have never failed to capture the true spirit of Durga Puja. As we get ready to celebrate the festival, we remember five of the most iconic scenes from Bollywood films. Read on:

Devdas:

Though in the novel Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit) never meets Paro (Aishwarya Rai), the custom of ‘Punya Maati’ (soil from the lands of prostitutes), for which they meet for the first time, still prevails. Coming back to the film, the breathtaking dance-off, Dola re... between Paro and Chandramukhi is nothing less than a pure visual treat for the audiences.

Kahaani:

No other film in recent time has depicted the flavour of Durga Puja with such elegance. Vidya’s (Vidya Balan) hunt for her missing husband takes place during the festive time, which captures the spirit of the city of joy. The climax sequence is indeed symbolic with Vidya slaying the villain, much like Mahishasuramardini.

Parineeta:

The opening scene of film shows Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan) in a royal Bong avatar as the Nawab of Bollywood shakes his legs to typical ‘Dhunuchi Naach’. Even Girish (Sanjay Dutt) gets into the traditional attire and performs another superb Dhunuchi Naach number, which leaves us asking for more.

Gunday:

Set in the backdrop of Kolkata, the film showcases Priyanka Chopra in a Bong avatar. As the lady waits for her beloved in the Durga Puja pandal, her lover finally arrives to complete the rituals of the Puja. But the entire sequence ends up on a tragic note with Priyanka getting hit by a bullet.

Lootera:

Like Parineeta, even Lootera opens with Durga Puja in the backdrop and introduces Pakhi’s (Sonakshi Sinha) family. What captures our attention is the enactment of Jatra, a folk theatre of Bengal, during the festive season. And the best part is that the custom is still prevalent in the interiors of Bengal.
