Playing Savita Bhabi onscreen was the biggest risk of my life - Haanssa Singh

Haanssa Singh

Gulshan Devaiah’s excited cry of Meow (a disguise for Main Aau) while eagerly waiting at the door of the seductive Savita Bhabhi to let him inside her house was definitely one of the high points of the recently released hit, Hunterrr. While Gulshan’s ‘Meow’ did give us the laughs, it was the ultra hot Haanssa Singh essaying the role of Savita Bhabhi who ended up grabbing maximum eyeballs in the scene. On the flip side, one had to make do with the limited screen time allotted to her character in the movie for audience wanted to see more of the actress and her role. We caught up with the Haanssa for an exclusive tete-a-tete.

Should we say hi or rather begin with a ‘Meow’?

(Laughs)  After the film got released, my friends started greeting me on phone not with a hello but with a meow. So when I used to hear 'meow' and I would say, ‘can we go further about it please’. I didn't know that it would be such a rage. All thanks to Harshvardhan Kulkarni (director) who coined it.

How did the movie happen?

I was at Starbucks sipping a cup of coffee when a call came from a friend who was casting for the film. He told me that it is a sex comedy and I declined the role immediately. He then said, ‘Hang on’ and passed the phone to Harsh who then narrated the story and explained my role to me. I was like a twenty-fourth hour casting in the movie and it is only because of Harsh I ended up saying yes to the role. I was the only actor who did the film without any workshop.

How was it shooting for your scenes?

The shoot happened fast. Gulshan is a very good actor and it was easy working with. I didn't want to do any intimate scenes because that is not my comfort zone and I am glad that it was taken care of.

But weren't you ever apprehensive about your role given the fact that Savita Bhabi is a cult figure in Indian erotica?

Well, thanks to the iconic character who I don’t know in person in any which ways, the name Savita Bhabhi is so big that when Harsh told me that the character’s name is Savita, I was like no ways. He then told me that the phone will ring with Savita Bhabhi as the caller name and I was like no don’t tell me this. I was apprehensive then because we know what the name suggests and nobody has done it till now on screen. So all those things flashed in my mind. But then Harsh convinced me and I said, ‘Ok let’s take a risk’. I would say playing Savita Bhabi onscreen was the biggest risk of my life and I am happy it paid off well. No one will make her look as simple as Harsh made it. He has given it a different meaning. Nothing was vulgar about my character.

Audience wanted to see more of you in the film. Disappointed that you had only a small part?

Good things come in small packages. I am very happy to know that people wanted to see more of me which is a huge promise for me as an actor. If I could make an impact in two scenes, I think I made a dent which was needed and required.

Would you ever do a full-fledged movie based on Savita Bhabhi?

It all depends on who is the director and how he is going to treat it. It takes a lot to make a film on Savita Bhabhi. One is to make it in a sleazy way which I am not open to. Doing Savita Bhabhi with Harsh was the best thing ever.

What kind of roles are you looking at playing?

I am looking at playing roles with substance. I am not an ornamental piece. People might find me nice, attractive and sexy but I am a human being with heart and soul and my heart beats for good things. So I would love my characters to be like that.

What’s coming next?

There is an interesting Bollywood project and another Indo-Hollywood project by Warner Bros. Unfortunately, I can’t talk much about them right now. So yes, lots of exciting things to look forward to.
