Actor-musician Piyush Mishra once revealed how he faced alcohol addiction; Says ‘Destroyed everything…’

MUMBAI: Piyush Mishra is a well-known actor and singer in Indian cinema. He joined the National School of Drama to study dramaturgy after being born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. His professional career began in Hindi theater. Actor, musician, and film lyricist Piyush Mishra is well-known for his talents. Aarambh Hai Prachand in Gulaal, Ik Bagal in Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1, Husna in MTV Coke Studio, and Arre Ruk Ja Re Bandeh in Black Friday are a few of his well-known songs.

Piyush Mishra previously talked about his battle with alcoholism. He revealed that he struggled with alcohol addiction for about 20 years following the 1980s. In an interview, Piyush Mishra noticed, "That ‘alcohol phase’ destroyed everything, I wonder how I came out of that alive." 

Amazingly, in 1989 he received an offer to play the lead in Maine Pyar Kiya. However, Salman Khan bagged the movie. Piyush Mishra stated in an interview with the popular entertainment portal that he declined the offer.

Despite battling alcohol addiction for nearly two decades, Piyush Mishra spent his youth in the Delhi theatres. He then moved to Mumbai and there he started his career in the 2000s. He faced challenges and was mainly offered small roles. Piyush Mishra then became popular for his role in Vishal Bhardwaj’s film Maqbool (2003).

After that, he struggled in Mumbai for around eight years. He then had the chance to compose music for the movie Gulaal, directed by Anurag Kashyap. He also managed to get a role in the movie.

He revealed that he went to Delhi to write the songs for Gulaal on the Kapil Sharma show. Piyush Mishra said, “When Anurag asked me to write the songs for Gulaal, I said I’d go to Delhi to do it. Just get me a ticket to Delhi and some liquor.”

After that, Piyush Mishra went to Delhi, wrote the songs, and returned. Piyush Mishra's performance in Gangs of Wasseypur won praise. Today, the 61-year-old actor travels all over the world and keeps showcasing his acting abilities in films.
