Anushka was afraid to play Mamata in 'Sui Dhaaga'

Actress Anushka Sharma, who is gearing up for the release of her forthcoming film Sui Dhaaga, says she was afraid to play the role of Mamata in the movie.

Anushka was present at the trailer launch of her upcoming film along with co-star Varun Dhawan, director-writer Sharat Katariya and producer Maneesh Sharma on Monday.

The actress said she loved the script, but she declined to play the character.

"When Sharat came to me with the script, I was excited to read it. I had seen his previous film and had loved it. When I read Sui Dhaaga, I loved the script and what they were trying to do with the story. I loved that Yash Raj was making the film but still, I said no at first.

"I could not understand how I would play this character. I always wanted to challenge myself as an actor but this was differing with my personality on another level. So I was afraid and I told him I don't think I can do this character."

Anushka also says that the only reason she agreed to do the film is that the film's director and producer had faith in her.

"Maneesh and Sharat were extremely convinced that I am the right person to play this character. Sharat even visited my house and he told me how he sees the character and why he thinks I am actually the right fit.

"To be honest I went with his faith in me more than my own faith in myself. And I am so happy that I actually did the film and I am so proud that I have played this character," she said.

When asked about her experience of learning the craft, she said, "I had a lot of fun while doing embroidery. My Dadi (grandmother) used to work with crochet embroidery and even my mother knew how to do it. She even used to stitch clothes so somewhere I had those memories so when I started doing embroidery, I picked it up very quickly.

"Thanks to Sui Dhaaga, we got to learn about these crafts, what skills are required to be a tailor and how difficult it is. Due to working on films like these, your appreciation and value for it increase on another level."

The story of the film is about finding love and respect through self-reliance. It also stars Varun Dhawan.

The film will release on 28 September.

Prateik Babbar joins Shraddha Kapoor -Sushant Singh Rajput in Nitesh Tiwari’s next

Dangal fame director Nitesh Tiwari is all set for his next venture and as reported earlier, Shraddha Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput are finalized for his untitled next produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Fox Studios. Joining the star cast as the main negative lead is Prateik Babbar, fresh from the success of Ahmed Khan’s Baaghi 2 and Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk. The actor has reportedly started his basketball and football training for the film as seen from his social media accounts.

A student-drama with a social message, the film is set in an engineering college and is about embracing success and failure with equanimity. The film is expected to roll by November 2018 and released in August 2019.

Nitesh, who bagged the Filmfare Best Director Award for Dangal, last co-wrote the hit rom-com, Bareilly Ki Barfi, with Shreyas Jain, which was directed by his filmmaker wife, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and he has co-written his next as well

An actor's job gets reduced to half with a good director: Vicky Kaushal

Vicky Kaushal, who is on a roll with his diverse roles in films like Raazi and Sanju, says working with a good director reduces an actor's effort by half to play a character convincingly.

Whether it was as a loving husband in Raazi, a Gujarati friend in Sanju, a light-hearted character in Love Per Square Foot, a corrupt police officer in Raman Raghav 2.0 or as a low caste boy in Masaan -- Vicky has been impressing the audience and critics with his performances, screen time notwithstanding.

He is humble in acknowledging the variety that he has been able to showcase in such a short span -- almost to the point of becoming Bollywood's latest poster boy of versatility.

"When you get to work with a good director, an actor's job gets reduced to half. From your end, you try to give your best to the characters. I am learning. Let's see where the journey goes," Vicky told a leading publication on the sidelines of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM).

He won the Best Supporting Actor honour at the IFFM Awards for his role as Kamli in Sanju. The movie has given a boost to Vicky's fan following, as was visible during his Melbourne stint when people gave him the loudest cheer wherever he went.

"I am happy that I am getting such chances, such films and that people are giving love. With every film, my confidence gets boosted, I feel motivated. It has been a good journey... My family is happy, I am happy," said Vicky, who has worked with filmmakers like Neeraj Ghaywan, Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar and Rajkumar Hirani.

He has an interesting forthcoming slate as well -- Uri which is based on the surgical strike conducted by the Indian Army in 2016, he has been announced as one of the cast members of Karan Johar's upcoming multi-starrer period drama Takht, and the upcoming Manmarziyaan which is winning people's heart with its trailer

Karan's Takht looks exciting with its cast comprising Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Vicky.

"I cannot talk too much about Takht apart from the fact that I am getting an opportunity to be directed by Karan sir, and work with a fabulous set of actors. It's any actor's dream come true, so I am very grateful," Vicky said.

He is also buoyed by the response to the trailer of Manmarziyaan, a love story set in Punjab and helmed by Kashyap.

"The trailer's response has been fabulous. I loved doing this film, so I am very excited about the response," Vicky said of the movie in which he stars with Taapsee Pannu and Abhishek Bachchan.

And then there's Uri, which is giving him a chance to show his action avatar.

"We did an out-and-out action shoot in Serbia, and it was very tough. Around 15 days of more shoot is to take place in Mumbai," said the son of popular Bollywood action director Sham Kaushal.

Overall, the actor says he is "taking one step at a time".

"I will give my best to the job always."

Anurag Basu, Bhushan Kumar join hands for a relationship drama

T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar has joined hands with director Anurag Basu for a multi-starrer relationship drama.

Basu, who will be directing the film, is currently working on finalising the actors for the project.

"I have had a great association with Bhushan. When I shared the idea of this project with him, he instantly decided to come on board. I have been working on the project for some time now and really looking forward to directing it. It's again going to be a ride of emotions on the silver screen," Basu said in a statement.

Kumar is also looking forward to the project.

"Anurag is a master storyteller and brings magic to celluloid in the way his stories pan out and the trajectories his characters follow. Both of us are super thrilled to be working together on a very special project with some very talented actors which we will be happy to announce soon," said the music industrialist-turned film producer.

T-Series has given hit films like Hindi Medium, Tumhari Sulu and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. And Basu is known for films like Murder, Gangster, Life in a... Metro, Kites, Barfi as well as Jagga Jasoos.

Shreyas to play Bengali writer

Actor Shreyas Talpade will play a quirky Bengali writer in the forthcoming action comedy film titled Bhaiaji Superhit.

Shreyas has been learning the dialect. He has been taking lessons in the language from close friend and actress Celina Jaitley.

The duo, who have worked together in the past and were last seen in the 2009 film Paying Guests, share a great bond as friends and co-actors.

"While working on Golmaal Returns and Paying Guests, we became really good friends. While shooting for Paying Guests, my wife Dipti and Celina became really great friends and would often go out for shopping together," Shreyas said in a statement.

"We would often go to each other's place. That's when I got to know that she speaks very fluent Bengali and was surprised on learning about this.

"When I bagged the role, Celina was the first person I thought of. I wanted to understand the dialect, nuances, pronunciation and the quirkiness in the Bengali language."

She guided and helped him a lot with the language and gave him a lot of suggestions which eventually helped him in preparing for his character.

Produced by Metro Movies and presented by Zee Studios, Bhaiaji Superhit is currently under production stage and is expected to release by October 2018.

Sanju’s screening gets a standing ovation; Simi Garewal pays tribute to Shashi Kapoor

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne had its awards night yesterday, beginning on an all-time high with Bollywood biggies like Rani Mukerji and Rajkumar Hirani leading the pack of winners like Richa Chadha and Vicky Kaushal to a rather lustrous third day.

Sanju, which won Best Film, with leading man Ranbir Kapoor bagging the Vanguard award, had a special screening at the La Trobe University in Melbourne which was followed by a rather interesting Q&A with director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi. The students were quite interested in the interaction and as the evening flowed, so did the session. With a rather fun repartee between the students and the esteemed director and writer, relevant questions and responses flew back and forth as Raju even answered the frequently asked question: Why did you make a biopic on Sanjay Dutt? “We were actually writing Munnabhai immediately after PK when we happened to meet Sanju. He was out on parole and we met at his place, when he started venting out; things that were bottled up. He just didn't care who he spoke to. He had to get it out.

I always had a professional relationship with Sanju, but that was one long evening. He has told us things about his life, things that I didn't know and I thought that's a wonderful story. Abhijat and I went over to his place for five days and just kept recording while he spoke. People know about the drugs and the controversies. But there are so many aspects of his life that the people don't know about. We wanted to show the world the other side of the story, the relationship he shared with his father, his mother; the wonderful relationship he shared with one of his closest friends. We wanted the audience to see that side of him,” the PK director replied.

Another highlight of the evening was the special screening of the evergreen Siddhartha starring the late Shashi Kapoor and Simi Garewal, who gave a rather touching tribute to her co-star and dear friend. Held at HOYTS, the evening brought in an eager crowd of cinephiles who wanted to watch this 1972 classic and get a feel of true cinema. A Q&A session followed the screening and the veteran actress answered several wonderful questions on the film and how it was way ahead of its time with much élan. Remembering such an important member of the Hindi film industry, Simi reminisced, “Shashi was my friend and fellow actor and it is very common in India to praise someone after they've gone but I have always said this, Shashi Kapoor was the perfect co-star.

You don’t want someone to interfere; you want someone to support you when you’re acting. You want someone well behaved, punctual, who is polite and courteous with everyone and he was exactly like that. He was very professional and he had no ego at all he would shake hands with everyone from the lighting technician to everyone else. He was amazing that way and I don’t know another actor in the world who would work in commercial cinema earn money from there and take it and put it into meaningful films like Kalyug, 36 Chowringhee Lane etc. But he had a passion for real cinema and he put his money where his mouth was. He started the parallel cinema. We never had it before.”

Day four of the Indian Film Festival closed on a positive and hopeful note, chronicling Sanju as a true film for the masses and Siddhartha as a film for every generation. The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will continue holding screenings of wonderful films from all across India and the subcontinent till 22 August, ensuring the Australian audiences revel in the truest sense of cinema.
