MUMBAI : Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan made a light-hearted introduction as 'Jaya Amitabh Bachchan' on the House floor a few days after objecting to the Rajya Sabha Chairperson referring to her by her husband's name. Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar responded to this light-hearted comment with a spectacular burst of laughter.
Along with Dhankhar, several opposition MPs laughed during the session, including Congress's Jairam Ramesh and AAP member Raghav Chadha. Jaya Bachchan and Jagdeep Dhankhar then had a light-hearted conversation.
“Did you get a lunch break today? No? This is why you’re taking Jairam ji’s name repeatedly. You cannot digest your food without taking his name,” Jaya Bachchan joked to Dhankhar.

Dhankhar replied, “I’ll tell you on a light-hearted note. I did not take a lunch break today, but I had lunch with Jairam ji.” His response further evoked laughter in the House.
This humorous incident came days after a more serious exchange on July 29, when Jaya Bachchan raised a strong objection to Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh referring to her as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.”
She asserted, “Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed. This is something new, that women will be recognized by the name of their husbands like they (women) have no existence or achievements of their own.”
In response, the Deputy Chairman, smiling, reminded her that her full name in the records was “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.” This incident quickly drew reactions online, with many applauding her stance.
One fan praised her courage, while another questioned why Amitabh’s name was included without her consent. “She’s not wrong in any sense,” commented another supporter, emphasizing that Jaya was a successful actress before marrying Amitabh Bachchan.
The episode also reignited conversations about women's identities in the workplace and public domains. Jaya's granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda previously described her grandmother's strength and independence when describing Jaya as her inspiration.
Navya stated in a 2021 interview with Her Circle, “She is someone who has managed to create her own identity, leave her own mark. One of the biggest things I respect about her is how she uses her voice for things she is passionate about. She has always been very unapologetic, to the point, unfiltered, and she has a spine.”
