MUMBAI: In Indian cinema, Kamal Haasan's 2000 film Hey Ram is regarded as a groundbreaking piece of cinema. Haasan gave an outstanding performance as the film's lead actor in addition to directing and producing it. Shah Rukh Khan also starred in the movie; Haasan said on Tuesday during the Indian 2 trailer release that SRK completed the movie for free.

Speaking on their bond, Haasan stated, “Let me talk on behalf of Mr SRK because I am sure that he’ll allow me to do that. When we worked together, we were all just people. I don’t see a superstar; he doesn’t see a super director. We are friends. As a matter of fact, Shah Rukh saab made that film (Hey Ram) for free. What more do you need?” the audience gave this revelation a round of applause.
Haasan continued, “That’s not something a superstar would do. That takes a true fan of cinema, a connoisseur of art, and a brilliant actor. I’m incredibly grateful to him.” Haasan downplayed the whole “superstar” title, saying, “We don’t see ourselves that way. You, the audience, give us these titles, and we shyly accept them.”
Despite not doing particularly well at the box office, Hey Ram was well-received by critics and eventually established a cult following. It was India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. The movie fearlessly addressed touchy subjects like the effects of violence on both individuals and society and religious intolerance. The portrayal of historical people and events sparked conversations and arguments.
Chennai-based Prasad Corporation restored the vintage movie to a stunning 12K resolution in January. They stated, “Hey Ram (2000), the monumental film crafted by the legendary Kamal Haasan, is now reborn in a ground-breaking 12K resolution. Prasad proudly unites with the iconic Kamal Haasan in preserving cinematic history forever.”
