MUMBAI: Kunal Kemmu’s Madgaon Express is a perfect example of a classic comedy film. Destined to become a cult classic, the movie has just the right amount of comedy and story to captivate audience’s attention, but it will probably not be honoured come awards season and that’s because comedy films and their performances do not get recognized much in cinema.
Madgaon Express actor Divyendu whose performance was commendable as doofus Dodo lifts the film at the peak.
It’s one thing to position a character as fraudulent and then build the audience’s sympathies for them where most of the filmmakers have tried to do the same and failed. But it’s genuinely an outstanding job done by Khemu to conclude Madgaon Express on a note that can only be described as superb.
Dodo’s evolution takes place where he finds an ability to be honest. Because earlier, he found it chemically impossible to stop lying.
Although it is impossible to blame Dodo’s behaviour as you begin to understand that this is exactly what a person like him would do in these situations. This is empathy. Most of it is down to how Dodo’s character has been written in a script, but Divyenndu’s contributions cannot be ignored. Closely inspired by the Zach Galifianakis character from the Hangover movies, Dodo is both pitiful and proud; he demands pity but also comes across as a pest.
Divyendu is outstanding not only in the emotional moments, such as that pre-interval scene and the climax, but often, he is asked to blend multiple tones in the same scene.
Divyendu's character, Dodo simply outlived his relevance. He was discarded like an old sweater, ignored like a stranger. His existence didn’t matter anymore. Everyone knows a Dodo, but Madgaon Express is a reminder that everyone in their lives had once become Dodo.
