Maharashtra Governer rejects plea to cancel Sanjay Dutt's jail term

Sanjay Dutt

In a turn of recent events the Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao has rejected Sanjay Dutt’s plea to waive off his remaining jail term.

Sources say Governor Vidyasagar Rao rejected the petition on the recommendation of the state home department, which said it would set a bad precedent as the actor's conviction was confirmed by the Supreme Court.

Sanjay is convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. In 2013, the Supreme Court sentenced him to five years in prison for the crime. The 18 months that Dutt had earlier spent in jail (in 1993) were taken into account and he was to spend another 42 months. He is set to release in February 2016.

Reports in the media have Katju quoted, “The only charge on which Sanjay Dutt has been found guilty is the charge of having in his possession a prohibited weapon”. He also emphasised that he was in no way questioning the Supreme Court verdict.

The actor is currently out on parole for his daughter's nose surgery after a long stay in Pune’s Yerwada Jail. His frequent breaks from jail though have been criticised by media and locals alike.
