Trailblazer director Penny Marshall dead at 75

Penny Marshall, star of US TV series Laverne and Shirley and director of hit films Big and A League of Their Own, has died at the age of 75, her publicist has said. She was 75.

Marshall died of complications from diabetes on Monday at her home in Hollywood Hills, California, her publicist said, the BBC reported.

The success of Big made Marshall the first woman to direct a film that made more than $100 million at the US box office. She was also the first woman to direct two films that made more than $100 million, and was only the second woman director to see her film Oscar-nominated for best picture, media reported.

In 2004, she was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, along with her Laverne and Shirley co-star.

Described a pioneer in the film-making industry, Marshall and co-star Cindy Williams starred in the 1970s Happy Days TV spin-off about two single, working women in late 1950s Milwaukee, which was a huge success.

After Laverne and Shirley, Marshall went on to become a producer and director whose films included box-office successes such as Big, starring Tom Hanks, and women's baseball comedy A League of Their Own.

Her first film was the 1986 Whoopi Goldberg comedy Jumpin' Jack Flash.

She also directed Robert De Niro and Robin Williams in Awakenings, which was nominated for three Academy Awards including best picture.

"She did commercial movies at a time when women weren't doing studio films. And so, she was a pioneer in the studio-movie world," Melissa Silverstein, founder of the advocacy group Women and Hollywood, told the BBC.

"She laid the groundwork for women to make commercial movies with her success. Her legacy is going to be Laverne and Shirley -- it was a groundbreaking sitcom and was just revolutionary.

"And she transitioned from acting into directing and became a director - a full-time director; the sad thing is she didn't have a longer career because of her success.

"I think that's a testament to how hard it was for women to get opportunities…you can count them on one hand.

"I just think that all the women who have come after have built their careers and their success on the pioneers of Penny Marshall, Nora Ephron, Penelope Spheeris -- those are the women who blaze the trail."

Hudgens was nervous to meet JLo

Actress Vanessa Hudgens says she was extremely nervous to meet singer-actress Jennifer Lopez.

Hudgens worked with Lopez in Second Act. PVR Pictures will release this film in India on 4 January 2019.

"When I came in to meet with Jennifer, I was so nervous that I actually laid down on the floor beforehand," Hudgens said in a statement to media.

"To just try to calm my nervous system. But as soon as I got into the room and started working with her, all the worries disappeared. She is all the things I wanted her to be. But even better. She is literally my ultimate role model," she added.

In the film, Lopez features as Maya, a 40-year-old woman who is frustrated with her unfulfilling life while working in a box store. It tells how her life turns around when she finds herself in the position to land her dream job in Madison Avenue.

Directed by Peter Segal, the film also features Leah Remini, Treat Williams and Milo Ventimiglia.

Miley Cyrus boasts about Liam Hemsworth

Singer-actress Miley Cyrus has advised women not to give up looking for a man with a number of desirable qualities, including common sense, faithfulness and empathy.

Her comment played out on Instagram, reported by leading publication.

Meme account SourPsycho shared a graphic on Instagram which read, "No Man has all five: good d**k game, empathy, a height above 5'9, no hoes, common sense."

In response, the Adore you singer, who is currently dating Liam Hemsworth wrote, "Mine does! Don't give up."

Lin-Manuel loved bringing his son on 'Mary...' set

Composer-actor Lin-Manuel Miranda says his four-year-old son Sebastian loved to accompany him on the sets of the film Mary Poppins Returns.

"I brought my son to set, every time that we filmed a musical number, and to watch his eyes like saucers while daddy danced with what seemed like 500 dancers and bikers. I'll never forget the look on his face, as long as I live," Lin said.

The 38-year-old star, who plays lamplighter Jack opposite Emily Blunt's magical nanny in the movie, is also a father of a 10-month-old Francisco, reports by media.

Brad Pitt defends himself

Actor Brad Pitt has come out to defend himself against claims that he helped Hurricane Katrina victims for good press.

Pitt is fighting back against claims made in a class-action lawsuit accusing the actor of only helping out in New Orleans, following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, to secure publicity and good press, reported by leading publication.

According to court documents, Pitt's legal representatives filed a motion on Monday asking to be removed as a defendant from the lawsuit, which was filed against both the Oscar winner and his charity the Make it Right Foundation.

Pitt's lawyers argue that the lawsuit "does not otherwise contain a single factual allegation that Mr. Pitt made any promise to any putative class member, that he entered any contract with any putative class member, or that he made any misrepresentation to any putative class member".

Furthermore, the actor's attorneys claim that, while the class-action lawsuit levels "a myriad of purported wrongful conduct", the plaintiffs in the suit "do not supply any specific facts indicating that Mr. Pitt was personally involved in any of them".

The motion comes in response to a recent memorandum filed by the plaintiffs, claiming the actor "gladly accepted responsibility for his personal participation when the publicity was favourable", reported by media.

Pitt is known for featuring in movies like Snatch and Inglourious Basterds -- aired in India on Star Movies Select HD.
