From Mother India to Khoon Bhari Maang, here are 8 'women-centric' movies that were made even before the term was coined

Hindi cinema has served variety of movies and stories, including women-centric movies, even at a time when the word 'women-centric' wasn't used popularly.
Mother

MUMBAI: The subject of Women empowerment has now become as big as it has ever been and were not just talking about movies or series but even social media and work-life situations.

If we still have to talk about entertainment world, well, recently the amount of women-centric movies have increased. It's not just about how many such movies but it's also commendable for the variety of such movies that have been releasing.

In the recent past, we have all watched and loved movies like Crew, Kahaani, English Vinglish, Mardaani, Gangubai Kathiwadi, and many more. Yes, the subject of women empowerment has taken a major shape, and even though it still needs more attention, we have to appreciate how far we've come not just in matters of making such movies but also in matters of understanding and acceptance.

There a lot of people in the audience who point out how this progress is recent but that's not the truth. Hindi cinema has served variety of movies and stories, including women-centric movies, even at a time when the word 'women-centric' wasn't used popularly. Take a look at some of the movies from that time:

Mother India

Directed by Mehboob Khan, this movie shows the pain and sufferings that a mother goes through while bringing up her sons but there comes a point when her responsibility as a mother takes the main stage and she has to make tough decisions. The movie released in 1957 and features Nargis, Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar Tuli.

Seeta aur Geeta

A famous story of two twin sisters - first one treated even worse than a servant by her money-grubbing aunt and on the other hand, elsewhere, the second one grows up to be a street performer with a gutsy attitude. The twist in the tale comes in when one day the sisters unintentionally swap places and later find out the truth. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, this Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini starrer released in 1972.

Khoon bhari maang

Directed by Rakesh Roshan, this is by far one of the best women-centric movie based on revenge featuring none other than the beautiful Rekha in the lead. The movie released in 1988 and showed the pain and strength of a woman as a wife and a mother.

Bandini

In 1963, there came a film directed by Bimal Roy, that featured Ashok Kumar, Nutan and Dharmendra which was set at the time of British Raj. The movie shows a Prison-doctor falling in love with a convict and slowly discovering her story and connection with a freedom fighter.

Bandit Queen

Bandit Queen is not just a movie title but now even referred to females who are wild and strong. The movie is directed by Shekhar Kapur who is known for Mr. India. The movie stars Seema Biswas, Nirmal Pandey and Rajesh Vivek. The movie is set on a real life woman, Phoolan Devi, also known as Bandit Queen who was imprisoned in 1983 but was set free in 1994. Even the movie released in 1994.

Mirch masala

Directed by Ketan Mehta, this 1986 movie was set in the colonial period and tells the story of a lonely woman who escapes from Subedars (tax collectors) who are chasing her and want to spend a night with her. This movie's cast included Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri.

Damini

Released in the year 1993, this movie was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and featured Meenakshi Sheshadri, Sunny Deol and Rishi Kapoor. Damini decides to take the legal route to flight for justice after witnessing a rape incident in her own house. While she goes through a lot during this struggle, she then gets major help from a disgraced lawyer who decides to go lengths only to bring her justice.

Bhumika

In 1977, Shyam Benegal came with an amazing movie named Bhumika. The cast of the movie includes Smita Patil, Anant Nag and Naseeruddin Shah.
