Irrfan Khan thanks audience for being a part of his journey

Actor Irrfan Khan on Tuesday acknowledged the IIFA Best Actor in a leading role Award that he has received for his performance in Hindi Medium, and has thanked the audience for being a part of his journey.

Irrfan, who is undergoing treatment in London for a neuroendocrine tumour, tweeted: "Thank you to IIFA and our audience who have been part for my journey."

The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards ceremony was held in Bangkok on 24 June.

Irrfan was lauded for his performance as a concerned father in a story which points out how the ability to speak fluent English is ignorantly considered a yardstick to measure sophistication and elitism.

The actor had earlier this month penned a heartfelt letter about how life-changing the disease has been for him, and how it has made him realise "how you are just a cork floating in the ocean with unpredictable currents".

His colleagues and friends from the industry have been sending him good wishes and praying for his well-being.

Irrfan's next movie Karwaan will release on 3 August.

Sunny Leone against animal testing for her cosmetics brand

Actress Sunny Leone's cosmetics brand 'Star Struck by Sunny Leone' uses animal rights organisation PETA India's cruelty-free logo as it is against testing products on animals.

The brand will be featured on People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India's 'Companies That Don't Test on Animals' list, which recognises companies that sell only cruelty-free cosmetics, personal care, and household cleaning products, read a statement.

Star Struck will use the special cruelty-free bunny logo on its packaging, like brands such as Omved, Soulflower, Herbal Strategi Vicco Laboratories and The Body Shop.

"Increasingly, consumers today want to be confident their purchases do not support harm to animals. PETA India's cruelty-free logo will help Star Struck proudly show that we are firmly against caging, poisoning (and) killing animals in any tests," Sunny said in a statement.

Sunny's company will be launching an online promotional campaign and contest with the animal rights organisation.

PETA India, whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to experiment on", notes that more than 3,000 companies around the world have banned all animal tests in favour of effective, modern, non-animal methods.

Sunny has been an animal advocate. She was PETA India's 2016 Person of the Year and has appeared in numerous campaigns for the group, including a pro-vegan fashion ad, a pro-vegetarian ad, an ad promoting the sterilisation of animal companions, and a pro-adoption campaign, in which she encouraged fans to "be an angel" by adopting a homeless dog.

Dia Mirza buys iconic 'Mother India' poster for Sanjay Dutt

Dia Mirza bid for and bought an original six-sheet poster of the landmark film Mother India -- depicting the iconic Nargis Dutt -- for Rs 145,000 in an auction. The actress, who features in a pivotal role in Sanju, a movie on Sanjay Dutt's life, wants to gift it to the Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. star.

Dia bid for the poster at Osian's IIFA Auction at the recently concluded International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards in Bangkok.

The poster of the 1957 movie Mother India was much in demand but the winning bid of Rs 145,000 came from the UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador Dia, known as much for her community services and activism as for her acting in cinema. She mentioned that she was buying the iconic poster and would like to offer it as a gift to Sanjay, read a statement.

In Sanju, a Rajkumar Hirani directorial, Dia essays the role of Maanyata Dutt, Sanjay's current wife, opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

The Osian's and IIFA collaboration saw the film fraternity put its weight firmly behind preserving and nurturing of India's rich cinematic culture and its fragile paper-based heritage.

The auction saw Neville Tuli, Chairman of Osian's Group, give vital insights into the need of preserving film memorabilia.

An exhibition was on view for a-day-and-a-half prior to the auction that saw much competition for most of the 109 lots that went under the hammer.

Actor Anil Kapoor got his hands on the iconic first release three-sheet poster of Mughal-e-Azam for Rs 210,000.

Anupam Kher made successful bids for the re-release half-sheet poster of Bandini for Rs 26,000, and a rare poster of Kabuliwala for Rs 34,000. This was the first public auction in which this rare version of Bimal Roy's 1961 Kabuliwala poster came up for sale.

Neville Tuli reiterates, "The auction was a major step forward in persuading the Indian film fraternity regarding a shared responsibility towards nurturing our cinematic culture and preserving the rare and fragile cinematic heritage. Stars such as Anupam Kher, Anil Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Bobby Deol, all contributed with a genuine love and commitment towards this long and shared journey.

"Hopefully with the opening of the Osianama Research Center, Archives and Library on 1 October, the unity of the film fraternity towards this cause will be evident to the whole world."

Self expression is important factor for artistes: Salim Merchant

Music composer Salim Merchant, who is mentoring new talent for an international music competition, says self expression and originality are the most important elements for an artiste.

"One of the very important factors in an artist is self expression. That creates self identity," Salim of the popular Salim-Suleiman duo, told IANS in an interview.

"These days, a lot of singers are sounding like Arijit Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan or someone else, but not something original. Now, as a music composer, if I can work with some of the icons, why should I work with these kids who do not have their own identity and, not bringing anything new on the table?"

So, he says the first and foremost thing that all the singers should understand is to build their identity.

"As an artiste, it is your inner journey to discover that. If you can do that, the chance is huge to make a difference.

"That apart, I think if the artiste has the time and inclination, they should try to create versatility in their performance. You might be great in one genre, try out the other one to find out the versatility in you," said the composer, who is also popular as a vocalist.

Salim, along with his brother Suleiman, has worked with many new playback singers in the Bollywood music industry, including Shruti Pathak, Neha Bhasin and Jonita Gandhi.

He said even when they cast a voice; they look for "originality, versatility and a voice that has an individual personality."

Emphasising on the importance of developing a good ear for music, Salim said, "Music is 50 per cent learning, 50 per cent listening. Unless you are listening to good music, you cannot become a good musician; whether a vocalist, instrumentalist.

"And there is a certain way to listen to music for a musician who gives you the creative and technical aspect of a composition," he added.

Salim is mentoring the finalist of Project Aloft Star, which is a partnership between Universal Music India and Aloft Hotels. The competition captures the essence of Aloft Hotel's belief in self expression through music.

Asked about how he looks at the involvement of corporates in the music business, the "Chak De! India" fame composer said, "It is great to bring two industry people from different ideas together.

"Music celebrates unity, so encouragement of corporate company in the music business is actually a great deal."

But, doesn’t the marketing mind control the creative mind of a musician?

"I can talk about myself, and no, I do not think that the creative expression of an artiste gets compromised before a marketing team.

"A corporate company highlights their brand value, and I will think about my brand value. So, when it is a collaboration, it is never ‘I', it is ‘we'. There is always a room for negotiation with a lot of respect for each other," replied the multiple award-winning Salim.

Project aloft Star started on Tuesday. It has finalists from countries like India, Greater China, Australia, Southeast Asia and Korea, who will be chosen to battle it out on 20 September in Seoul.

Wedding Celebrations begin for Masan actress Shweta Tripathi

Masaan actress Shweta Tripathi is all set to tie the knot with rapper Chaitanya Sharma aka Slow Cheeta. The couple had a private mehendi ceremony at the rapper’s house yesterday. It was a fun filled and chilled out event, with the bride-to-be looking adorable in a yellow mid length dress.

The bridal mehendi was a reflection of the couple as the theme for the occasion was their love story. On her right hand, Shweta has a rollercoaster, as that’s where Cheeta had asked her out when they first started dating and on her left hand she has a plane their love story began on a flight. Under the plane is a placard with their wedding date on it (29th June 2018) and theatre masks representing the place where they first met and their love common love for the stage and acting.

“There are elements from our wedding invite too. There’s a crab, as I am Cancerian, there’s a football as it’s his first love, apparently. Then there’s an umbrella, champagne glasses, sunglasses a starfish and bride and groom figurines. I love lotuses, birds and fish, so they are also in my mehendi in abundance, all over!” the gushing bride said of her rather unconventional mehendi.
