Omung Kumar turns to painting for a cause

Filmmaker, art director and anchor Omung Kumar has a soft side for dogs, especially strays and abandoned ones. It is because of this that he agreed to design the 2019 calendar for an NGO committed to welfare of animals.

Animal Matters To Me (AMTM) works towards the welfare of cats, dogs, birds and more. Omung and his wife Vanita have been supporting the organisation for the past eight years.

On being approached to design this year's calendar, Omung agreed as he believes that with this association, he could express his love for dogs. He went ahead to paint the actual rescues in the AMTM rehab facility.

"Vanita is hands-on attached with AMTM's. The work they both do for our four-legged friends is commendable. So when they asked me whether I would be interested in designing this year's calendar, I readily agreed.

"I wanted to make it special and not just use photographs to make the calendar. And the thought of painting each and every picture in my style dawned on me to make it more special. So I'm back to my old love which is painting," Omung said in a statement.

By selling these calendars, they would be helping AMTM and all the animals that are there. After that, Omung plans to auction the original paintings too, he said.

All the proceeds generated from the 10,000 printed copies will go to the AMTM rehab centre here and the upcoming sanctuary in Kolad, Maharashtra. Each sold calendar will aid five animals in need.

Esha Deol unveils Bengali bride look from ‘Cakewalk'

Actress Esha Deol Takhtani on Thursday unveiled her Bengali bride look from Ram Kamal Mukherjee's short film Cakewalk.

The actress is marking her comeback with the 22-minute film in which she plays the role of a chef.

"It took almost three hours for me to get the look right. Thanks to my director Ram Kamal who was very particular about every detail," Esha said.

She has been styled by Kareen Punjwani for this look. The heavy gold embroidered Benarasi saree was sourced for just one shot in the film, whose poster has been designed by Kolkata-based Ekta Bhattacharya.

On the poster, Mukherjee said, "It tells a lot about the film. I wanted a dichotomy that would create that characteristic rift. Esha is a gifted actor and she is natural. That's what makes her look so convincing as Shilpa Sen."

The ‘shanka' and ‘pola' (red and white bangles) that a Bengali woman wears as a sign of being a married woman, were ordered from Kalighat temple here, and the gold jewellery adorned by Esha was also designed by a store in Kolkata.

"Ram Kamal made me do almost the rituals for the shoot, and we were joking that I am forever stuck in a wedding ritual. Before Radhya (daughter) was born, we have a Sindhi ritual where the bride and groom take ‘pheras' again. And again I am in this bridal outfit for Cakewalk, and now in ‘Ramayan' ballet also, I do Sita's swayamvar scene," quipped Esha, who is veteran actress Hema Malini's daughter and also a classical dancer.

Cakewalk is co-directed by Abhra Chakraborty and produced by Dinesh Gupta, Shailendra Kumar and Aritra Das under the banner of Assorted Motion Pictures and SS1 Entertainment.
