MUMBAI : Sanjay Leela Bhansali is renowned for his ability to create cinematic masterpieces that blend grandeur with poignant storytelling. His 2022 release Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, has not only won critical acclaim but has also garnered heaps of praises globally. Now, joining the spree of praising the film is the international star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who found the film very unique and different from anything ever seen.

Reflecting on his experience watching the film, Gordon-Levitt at a recent fest remarked, “I was just watching that movie and just found it so beautiful and so unique. And it’s completely different from anything I’ve seen. Because it’s this very heavy and distinguished drama that looks like a Scorsese movie at times. It’s gorgeous. It made me want to learn more and more about Indian cinema.”

This acknowledgment from Gordon-Levitt highlights Bhansali's unique ability to impress audiences across cultural boundaries. In Gangubai Kathiawadi, Bhansali explores the life of a resilient woman navigating the complexities of power and survival in Mumbai's underworld. His trademark visual flair—lush sets, striking costumes, and a meticulously crafted narrative—creates an immersive experience for the viewers.

Bhansali’s films often reflect his passion for storytelling and artistry, qualities that Gordon-Levitt notes as inspiring. “I love what I’m feeling from the culture here and there’s genuine love for movies and artistry,” he shared. The cultural exchange in Bhansali has piqued the interest of filmmakers worldwide, with Gordon-Levitt expressing a desire to come to India to create his own film.

The film, which was released amidst the challenging backdrop of a global lockdown, faced unique hurdles. Yet, against all odds, the film not only won the audiences hearts but also emerged as a blockbuster. Bhansali's distinctive touch and storytelling prowess played a pivotal role in the film's success, despite a 50 percent occupancy in cinema halls.
