Debutant director Harshavardhan Kulkarni’s first venture in Bollywood deals with the story of a man who is a Vasu, a term used to denote a man who loves having sex with different women. While the movie is not a biography of a single person, it inspired from the lives of real Vasus some of whom are Harshvardhan’s friends as well.
Says Harshavardhan, “As soon as I was out of FTII, I developed this concept. Right from my school days, I have been seeing such people who have been interested in many women. All of us are interested in women but these people cracked the code. They knew how to woo women. And I am not talking about good looking guys. These were average lookers. There were atleast two or three guys that I know who used to be experts and they were looked upon as heroes. Some of these men even started going for married women which was unheard of in olden days.”
While there are no surefire formulas that can help you win a girl, Harshvardhan feels the biggest weapon employed by a Vasu is daring. Explains Harshavardhan, “The biggest tool is daring. Walking up to a girl and asking her out is what many of us are afraid to do. We keep thinking but never dare to ask because we are scared of rejection.”
Harshavardhan also believes that a Vasu’s success lies in spotting the right girl. “While having guts to ask a girl is one thing, a Vasu also identifies the right girl. When somebody is giving a Vasu more attention, he will approach her and talk to her. He will then pepper his conversation with slightly sexual innuendos. On gauging the reaction, he will take the next step which more often than not is going for the kill.”
While men who to try to womanise have often been looked down upon, Harshavardhan feels Vasu is not exactly a lech or tharki as is referred to in Hindi. “Vasu is a cute term. He understands women and their needs. A Vasu is someone who is interested in sex and looks out for someone with same needs in opposite sex. Women too are interested in sex as much as men. Sex and middleclass are a super combination. We shy away from talking about it. Vasus exist because there are girls who are interested in sex as well.”
Hunterrr starring Gulshan Devaiah, Sai Tamhankar and Radhika Apte opens in theaters today.
