MUMBAI: Even though there are many famous couples in Bollywood, many people still find famed actor Shabana Azmi and her husband, screenwriter-lyricist Javed Akhtar, to be their favorite. Their wonderful connection, which they still maintain even after 40 years of marriage, is not the only reason for this; it's also because they are outspoken about social and political issues.
Since Akhtar was married and had two children at the time, Farhan and Zoya, Azmi's affair with the artist caused quite a stir at first, even though both of their families were artistic and adhered to Communist ideology. On December 9, 1984, the two eventually got married.

However, Azmi subsequently said that she first avoided Akhtar because of stories that he and his screenwriting partner Salim Khan were big-headed people, even when he came to see her father, the well-known Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi.
“Both our fathers were communists and lyricists. We had identical backgrounds. Back then, he (Akhtar) had just started writing poetry and used to visit my abba (father) to recite his works to him. But I kept my distance from him because I had heard that Salim-Javed was very arrogant and to be avoided. So, I did not pay much attention to him,” Azmi recalled during a chat on Arbaaz Khan’s celebrity talk show, The Invincibles Series.
“After watching my film Sparsh (1980), he praised it a lot. Then he came home and invited all of us who worked on that film. He knew and remembered each and every dialogue in it and even the minute gestures of all of us. That’s when I understood that he had good sensibility. After that, whenever I sat with him, I felt that he was so similar to my father. I felt that he was the right person for me and that’s how the relationship started,” she added.
Speaking on Akhtar's struggle with drinking, Azmi described this stage as "difficult."
“He knew that if he goes on like this, he won’t live for long and that he won’t be able to do his work creatively. We were in a flat in London. He was stinking of alcohol and I said, ‘Oh my god, this is going to be one of those trips’. Very quietly he told me, ‘Make me some breakfast’. He had breakfast and after that he told me, ‘I am not going to drink anymore’,” she recalled.
