The other day we had reported that Bhavna Talwar and her husband Sheetal Talwar are to make a biopic based on the life of Guru Dutt.
After that there were talks in film circles that the National Award-winning filmmaker’s family members had raised serious objection on the making of the biopic. In fact, Guru Dutt's son Arun and his niece and acclaimed filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi had voiced their protest about the Talwars not informing them or taking due permission from them for the project.
This notwithstanding, Sheetal had justified that they were going ahead with the script saying, "There is a clear law that a celebrity's life can be put on celluloid from whatever information is up on the public domain. We will adhere to that. We will definitely go to Guru Dutt's family members, but only once the script is ready."
To this an angry Arun had shot back, "Whatever is in the public domain about my father is not entirely correct. It will be a big mistake on Bhavna's part to blindly believe that material." Seconding Arun, Lajmi said, "While I think Bhavna is a fine filmmaker, she will have to be extra careful in doing her research. We, the family members of Dutt, are still alive. It is always a sensitive issue when you are making a biopic on a person who is not around anymore to defend himself. Also, I am a bit apprehensive about Bhavna trusting material available in the public domain."
The latest is that Arun and Lajmi have decided to take legal action against Bhavna and Sheetal in the event they go on the floors with the biopic without showing them the complete script.
