MUMBAI : Sonali Bendre had no desire to be an actor, unlike many idealistic people. She was brought to the city and put on the acting career by sheer chance. Sonali witnessed her parents' financial challenges directly because she came from a family where her father, an "honest" central government employee, was frequently transferred.

When her father was sent to Mumbai when she was a teenager, her story took a different direction. Sonali Bendre recently revealed in an interview how her decision-making process at the time was greatly influenced by getting her first cheque and realizing the potential profits.

Sonali was shocked to find out that the contract was for Rs 25,000, a hefty amount at the time when she received her first salary in the early 1990s. She began to see the bright financial future that a career in show business had for her after receiving this information.

She told the popular news portal, “The thing that changed for me was when I saw the contract. Whatever you give and what they said they will give was also like ‘what! I can make this and that got me thinking. So, I said, this world exists? And that’s when I told my father, look at my age. I have the time. I have it on my side. I promise you, give me three years. If this doesn’t work out, I will do what you’re saying, but look at the amount of money. If it works out, I can use that for life.”

Describing the financial challenges her family faced at the time, Sonali viewed her entry into the entertainment industry as a means to uplift her family from those circumstances.

Reflecting on her motivation, Sonali added, “If my father was not going through that kind of a struggle, and if I was not seeing how my parents were struggling and what they were feeling, I would have probably not stood up and said, I’m doing it.”

Sonali began her career as a model when she was a teenager and worked in a lot of advertisements before moving into Bollywood. Her roles in the films Diljale (1996), Duplicate (1997), Major Saab (1998), and Dhai Akshar Prem Ke (2000) brought her recognition. Significant events were recently marked by the 25th anniversary of her films Sarfarosh and Hum Saath Saath Hain, which were released earlier this year.

Sonali made her acting return with the web series The Broken News (2022), after taking a hiatus due to her cancer battle. Her most recent involvement in the mentioned online series' second season demonstrates her continued commitment to both her craft and her relationship with her fans.

She had previously discussed her illness in an interview with a well-known news portal, “My illness has taught me that beauty is in imperfection. Perfect things are not as beautiful as imperfect things are. I have learnt to love my imperfections. Now, I don’t want to be stuck with just the looks. I want something beyond that which is where Broken News comes in.”
