The ethereal Rekha walked into our hearts with her riveting performance in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's timeless 1980 classic Khubsoorat. The movie even won Rekha her first Filmfare award as lead actress. Exactly three decades later, the movie is being remade with Sonam Kapoor essaying the lead role.
Now to replicate the magic weaved in by Rekha was always going to be tough. Thankfully, Sonam hasn't tried aping or even tried to outdo what Rekha has done in the original classic. At the trailer launch today, Sonam was candid enough to admit that she can never do what Rekha has done in the original Khubsoorat.
"I don't think I can do justice to what Rekha has done. Hrishikeshji made films that were wholesome in nature. His films meant something and had great values. Films like Guddi, Mili had a vibe that appealed to everybody right from the age group of six to sixty. Perhaps only Raju Hirani is making films like those now. I always wanted to be a part of such films. We have a notion that only dark films are good films. But such wholesome entertainers are also good films. And my Khoobsurat is an ode to Hrishikesh Mukherjee kind of films," said Sonam.
Sonam firmly believes values that formed a part of Indian culture in the 80s are in vogue even today. "What is relevant to human kind will always be relevant. Human values like love and kindness will never change," asserted Sonam.
Khoobsurat starring Sonam and Pakistani actor Fawad in lead roles will release in September this year.
