MUMBAI: Hollywood has seen its fair share of great movies on investigative journalism, with the likes of Spotlight, All the President's Men, Salvador, She Said, Frost Nixon, Absence of Malice, and State of Play being hailed as masterpieces. Indian shores, have really dived into this front. So, producer Ekta Kapoor finally decided to shake things up for Bollywood — as she usually does — with The Sabarmati Report, starring Vikrant Massey, Raashi Khanna, and Ridhi Dogra, and the result is something we can all be proud of.

The Sabarmati Report comes across as an explosive eyeopener from the get go that never loosens its grip on the true story it boldly tackles, just like any good investigative journalist wouldn't. Dheeraj Sarna's direction daringly dives in detail behind a horrific incident from recent Indian history, unmasking both credible and yellow journalism in the process. We finally get to see what all went on behind the scenes and it'll leave you stunned to say the least.

VikrantMassey continues to build a sterling repertoire, Raashi Khanna keeps making all the right moves whenever she steps into
Bollywood, and Ridhi Dogra personifies a boss nobody wishes to have. Kudos to EktaKapoor for never flinching to stand her ground on screen. The only drawbacks here are first, a screenplay that sometimes needlessly gets either too sappy or too frivolous, sidetracking from an otherwise gritty narrative, and secondly, Manan Sagar's shoddy editing, that tampers with the flow and distracts viewers at crucial juncture.

Nevertheless, The Sabarmati Report is India's first, proper investigative journalistic movie, and deserves a good, hard look at a hard subject.
