Navjyot Singh Sidhu took the limelight away from under the nose of Shekhar Suman on the sets of Star One's The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, a nationwide search for the best comedian in the country. Navjyot Singh Sidhu took the limelight away from under the nose of Shekhar Suman on the sets of Star One's The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, a nationwide search for the best comedian in the country. With his ready wit and brilliant comic timing, Sidhu's Sidhuisms, not only made Shekhar grapple for words, but also had the gathered media in splits. The result was a memorable evening with the masters of the art of comedy.
Here are excerpts from the many one-liners that were thrown around (Shekhar had to sometimes listen in silence, while the master batsman hooked and drove in style)
ON THE SHOW
Sidhu: Great variety. Truely, variety is the spice of life. The contestants from Hyderabad rock
Shekhar: The contestants on the show are here to carve a niche…ready to take risks. The Great Indian Comedy Show is a step towards the right direction as far as comedy as a genre is concerned.
ON THE ANCHOR OF THE SHOW
Sidhu: She can charm the birds on a tree and shoot them with a double barrel
Shekhar: She has beauty and the brains to go with it!
ON COMEDY
Sidhu: Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, snore and you sleep alone!
Shekhar: Talking on the subject of sex, one gentleman says just this --- "Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure." Comedy is all about spontaneity.
Sidhu: Humour is like the barbers chair it fits any bottom
ON BEAUTY
Sidhu: Beauty is worse than wine, it is intoxicating both for the holder and the beholder
Shekhar: ( To a beautiful girl) It's better to keep your mouth shut and let people imagine that you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
ON COMEDY IN LIFE
Sidhu: Life is a tragedy for those who feel comedy for those who think.
Shekhar: In comedy, somebody's meat is somebody's poison.
The absolute winner was an anecdote from Sidhu on Kapil Dev's dilemma on a tour abroad. Kapil Dev was asked, "Why can't our country produce a Kapil Dev?" Pat came the reply from the speedster--- "My mother is 62 and my father dead, there cannot be another Kapil Dev."
