I only work with people I love: Dia Mirza

Having worked in films like Sanju, Dum, Parineeta, and Salaam Mumbai, actress Dia Mirza says her mantra in life has been to work with people she loves and respects.

After the success of Sanju, what is she looking forward to on the film front?

‘I have a very simple guiding rule in my life I only do what I love and I only work with people I respect and love. So whenever an opportunity comes by for me that builds a sense of respect and trust and I'd enjoy being a part of it, I will definitely do it,’ Dia told a leading publication.

The 36-year-old actress left a mark with her film debut in 2001 with Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein and was later seen in commercial hits like Lage Raho Munna Bhai and Shootout at Lokhandwala.

However, she feels happy to be called the Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein girl. The film is a romantic drama and has been loved for the camaraderie between Dia and actor R. Madhavan.

‘For every actor, it's such an incredible gift to have that one film they can relate to you with. It is such a joy and privilege to be called the 'Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein' girl... To have people come up to me and ask when the sequel will be made... I think it's the most wonderful thing and I am very lucky.’

Dia was at the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2018 to speak on fashion for sustainable development with the UN.

The former beauty queen, who is also the UN Environment's goodwill ambassador for India, says she supports eco-friendly fashion and would like to do her own clothing one day.

‘I support sustainable fashion and I am always wearing garments made by designers in a sustainable way. I would love to do a line someday,’ she said.

On the concept of sustainable fashion, the environment activist said, ‘What I hope to do as an UN environment goodwill ambassador in India is to continue to find meaningful platforms with established and upcoming designers in the country. We seriously need to readdress the way we produce and we package. With India being a large consumer base for fashion products and clothing, it becomes even more incumbent upon us to become responsible producers.’

She says having popular names talking about causes spreads more awareness.

‘Because more people are willing to listen and the perspective I give my speech on is on a human perspective. I often try and personalise and offer people an opportunity to identify with the science,’ she added.

Rhea Chakraborty prefers to focus on the future

Actress Rhea Chakraborty says she doesn't look back at her movie choices and focuses on her future.

Asked how she looks back at her career graph, Rhea told a leading publication: ‘I don't look back at it. I just look forward.’

She has seen success with Mere Dad Ki Maruti and saw failure with films like Sonali Cable, Bank Chor, and Dobaraa: See Your Evil.

The 26-year-old actress says she has learnt to be okay about failure.

‘There are those times in everyone's life. But in terms of Bollywood, everyone knows when a film is a hit or a flop. So, everyone feels that low with you... The more and more I have been here I have started realising the fact that it's okay! It is just a film. I gave it my all and I will do it again,’ she added.

Rhea started her television career in 2009 with the reality show Teen Diva and was the first runner-up. Later on, she auditioned to be a VJ and was selected for the job. She has hosted several shows, including Wassup, TicTac College Beat, and Gone in 60 Seconds.

Asked about her transition from TV to movies, she said, ‘When I look back at it, it feels like yesterday. Secondly, the fun part is that I got to do VJ-ing, which was fun and came naturally to me. I felt acting is more challenging for me. You had to get into the skin of the character and be the character. There is a critic and then there is Friday... I enjoy the challenge and the process.’

Rhea walked as the showstopper for designer Urvashi Joneja's collection titled Away. The actress was seen in a dazzling black backless floor gown.

Talking about the showstopper garment, Rhea said ‘It's a really nice comfortable fun sexy outfit and it has pockets.’

Is Rhea fashion conscious?

‘I am fashion conscious but not to the extent that girls are. I am just fashion conscious to the point where I want to look presentable and nice when I walk out of the house,’ she said.

On the acting front, she will next be seen with actor Sooraj Pancholi in a yet untitled film.

We have taken a leap forward: Javed Akhtar

Lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has said the music industry has wasted a lot of time and resources in the civil war within the industry, but now, it is on the right track.

Akhtar was present at the Dialogue: The Indian Music Industry Convention 2018, an initiative by the Indian Music Industry (IMI) on Wednesday in Mumbai with other keynote speakers such as Grammy Award Winner Seymour Stein, Shridhar Subramanium, Chairman IMI, K.T Ang, Regional Director IFPI and Blaise Fernandes CEO IMI.

Music industry veteran Akhtar while addressing the audience said change has taken place for the betterment. ‘I would like to sensitize people about some factors of the industry that you may not be aware of. For centuries we rode on a horse and used an oil lamp, but in the last 200 years, we have taken a leap forward.’

‘All that you see today, the technology, has happened only in the last 200 years. Similarly, in the music industry for the last two years, sudden major changes have taken place for the betterment. We have spent a lot of time in a civil war within the industry. We have wasted time, resources and talent. But now we have come together.’

Akhtar also thanked the government for changing the scenario. ‘Thanks to the governments, I am saying governments because both the previous one and present one have been very helpful. They have changed the scenario,’ he said.

Akhtar was also presented with The Man of the Year Award for his contributions to the Indian Performing Rights Society as the board chairman. After receiving the award, he said, ‘This is not just for me but for all of those who have given their everything for the development and progress of our industry.’

A special video was played by the organizers, which had many members of the industry including A.R. Rahman and Karan Johar praising Javed Akhtar's contribution to the music industry.

The Rock On lyricist also talked about what an artist gives back to society and why they should be appreciated more.

‘The relationship between the producer's label and artist can not only be transactional. If it is, then as an industry, you lose great support. The kind of work an artist puts in, in any society all over the world is unparallel,’ he said.

Varun Dhawan actually learnt tailoring for Sui Dhaaga

Actor Varun Dhawan, who plays a tailor in upcoming entertainer Sui Dhaaga - Made in India, says that he gave three months to learn tailoring to ensure he gave his best to the role.

‘I knew that I had a task at hand. I knew I had to master the art to convince people that I am a real masterji. Darshan (the costume designer) and Noor bhai (the tailor on the sets) helped me a lot and I gave it three months to learn this skill,’ Varun said in a statement.

‘As an actor, I like to get challenged to become someone else on-screen,’ added the actor, whose character is named Mauji in the movie, which also stars Anushka Sharma.

He says the experience of learning how to tailor wasn't easy at all.

‘It was frustrating because initially, I wasn't getting it right. The needle pierced my fingers multiple times. (But) I'm so glad that I went through the drill because I have picked up a new skill in the process.’

‘It took me 3 months... Sometimes 2 hours and sometimes 4 hours in each tailoring class to get the confidence that I could pull this off in front of the camera,’ added the Badlapur actor, claiming that he is now very comfortable on the sewing machine.

Sui Dhaaga brings together National Award winning producer-director combo of Maneesh Sharma and Sharat Katariya after their blockbuster Dum Laga Ke Haisha.

The film is a special salute to the inherent entrepreneurial spirit that the youth of India and the country's local artisans have.

We felt like Toba Tek Singh: Ketan Mehta

Filmmaker Ketan Mehta, who has directed the short film Toba Tek Singh as part of ZEE5 Film Festival, says even after so many years of the partition of India and Pakistan, the bitterness affects the human relation with the neighboring country.

The short film festival coming live on OTT platform ZEE5—a series of 12 short films directed by 12 directors, where the initial idea was to bring six Indian and six Pakistani directors together to make these short films and travel each other's country to create a nice cultural exchange.

‘We all met in Amritsar and went to Wagah border; we clicked pictures also. But we did not get visa to go to Pakistan. That way, we all felt like Toba Tek Singh, caught in nomads land,’ Mehta told the media on Wednesday after the screening of Toba Tek Singh, based on Sadat Hassan Manto's short story of the same name.

He went on to say, ‘As a filmmaker, we always want people to watch it on big screen. In fact, when the whole concept started, we thought, it would be a great opportunity to bond over films in two countries.’

‘By the time film making ended, the relation between the two counties changed. So, though the idea was to travel with films to send out message of peace and harmony, unfortunately, that did not happen,’ said the filmmaker.

The film features Vinay Pathak and Pankaj Kapur in the lead roles.

‘I would say that this is one of the greatest stories that has been written on partition even in the history of literature. The story constantly questions on things and holds a strong relevance. The story is really close to my heart,’ said Pankaj Kapur who played the title character of the short film.

The ZEE5 film festival will show one film every Friday starting August 24 with the opening film Toba Tek Singh.
