In an attempt to change its image, Doordarshan has started telecast of a new serial titled Gora which is based on a novel by the same name, written by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. This 26 episode series is produced by well-known documentary producer Gargi Sen and directed by her filmmaker brother Somnath Sen (Leela). The cast comprises of newbies who have worked with the director before in his days of Film and Television Institute of India (Pune). Producer Gargi tells us, “Although Gora was written over a century ago (1907-1909), its main issues of nation building (we are just 60 year old independent country), social division and urban-rural disconnect remains alive even today.” Somanth adds, “This social chaos will be viewed through love stories between the main characters.” In terms of viewership patterns, Gargi says, “I hope Gora with its love story and deep thinking will bring back the two main segments of Indian society i.e. youth and intellectuals who today keep distance from the idiot box. The kind of responses we are getting from the generation next on our Facebook page is heartwarming. What will further attract the youth would be the coming of age of the characters (social awareness, love v/s infatuation) and the visual delights of the show.” On her views of Doordarshan as the platform, the producer says, “The public broadcaster is the largest television network in India, and I don’t feel any other network would have agreed to make a show on a theme like Gora. I am also quite happy that DD is finally shedding its insular image and going all out to publicize itself which we hope will help us to connect with the youth in all parts of the country and not just the metros.” Gargi however admits that 26 episodes is less to televise a 600 plus page novel. “We had asked for 52 episodes but then we have to go with what we get. They have also promised that they will make a film out of it as well.” Watch Gora every Monday and Tuesday at the 9.30 pm slot on Doordarshan’s National channel.
