Shocking! Aamir Khan had asked Rani Mukerji to dub her voice for this film

Rani Mukerji had her first commercial success with the action film Ghulam (1998) and breakthrough with the romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). Following a brief setback, the year 2002 marked a turning point for her when she was cast by Yash Raj Films as the star of the drama Saathiya.

MUMBAI: Rani Mukerji had her first commercial success with the action film Ghulam (1998) and breakthrough with the romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). Following a brief setback, the year 2002 marked a turning point for her when she was cast by Yash Raj Films as the star of the drama Saathiya. She established herself by starring in several commercially successful romantic films, including Chalte Chalte (2003), Hum Tum (2004), Veer-Zaara (2004), and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), and the crime comedy Bunty Aur Babli (2005).

Rani worked with Aamir Khan in Ghulam in which her voice was dubbed because the lead actor thought her voice wasn’t ‘nice’ during the time.

In a 2018 interview, Rani Mukerji spoke about the time when her voice was dubbed in Ghulam as Aamir Khan, Mukesh Bhatt, and Vikram Bhatt felt that she didn’t have the ‘shrill, nice and beautiful voice’ like other heroines at the time. The actress said, “Aamir had a conversation with me, he said, ‘You are a fan of Sridevi, and her voice was dubbed for so many of her films, so it’s okay. We should do anything for the betterment of the film.’”

She further recalled, "Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai were being shot simultaneously. We were shooting the KKHH teaser. I was to start dubbing for it, and Karan asked, ‘I believe your voice is being dubbed (by someone else) in Ghulam, why?’ I told him that they thought my voice was not good. He asked me whether I had dubbed for my first film. He asked me if I had any issues with dubbing at all. He told me to dub for KKHH."

Soon after watching Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Aamir Khan called her and admitted that he made a huge mistake by dubbing her voice in Ghulam.

The actress is involved with humanitarian causes and is vocal about issues faced by women and children. She has participated in concert tours and stage shows, and featured as a talent judge for the 2009 reality show Dance Premier League. She is married to filmmaker Aditya Chopra, with whom she has a daughter.
