After its restoration, M S Sathyu’s Garam Hawa is being readied to be re-released soon. The film, that has been restored, its soundtrack has been digitally re-mastered to Dolby stereo format, is all set to open on the silver screen on as any as 100 screens across India by Darr Films. The 1973 Hindi-Urdu film was based on an unpublished Urdu short story by Ismat Chughtai and adapted for screen by Kaifi Azmi, who also wrote its lyrics. The film was the last project of the late Balraj Sahni. It was India's official entry to the Academy Award's Best Foreign Film category, and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in an era when the festival received entries from every country. It also won the National Film Award and three Filmfare Awards. Interestingly, apart from being the 100th anniversary of Indian cinema, 2013, also marks the 100th birth anniversary (1 May, 1913) of the late Balraj Sahni. The restored version of Garam Hawa was screened at the IFFI last year.
