I enjoy playing dark characters: Konkana Sen Sharma

Thinking actress Konkana Sen Sharma is back from a two-year motherhood break with Ekta Kapoor and Vishal Bhardawaj’s Ek Thi Dayaan that released last Friday. “It was a matter of great pride to be associated with this Ekta Kapoor co- produced project as it is based on a three page short story that my dad (Mukul Sharma) had written 30-35 years ago. He had written several dark stories back then but they did not have dayaans (witches). Rather, they were creepy and interesting,” the actress informs.

He had written several dark stories back then but they did not have dayaans (witches). Rather, they were creepy and interesting,” the actress informs. Talking about the film, Konkona briefs “I can’t reveal much about my character except that she enters the life of Emraan Hashmi and raises quite a few queries.” The actress who has done all kinds of films be it slapstick or art house, says,“ One of the main reasons why I said yes to this supernatural thriller was that till now I have mostly played strong and positive characters. Since we are trying to establish who among the three women (Huma Qureshi, Kalki Koechlin and me) is the dayaan in this film, all have some native traits. I enjoy playing dark characters and hope to play more such roles in the future as well,” she quips. When asked if she believes in dayaans, Konkana whose last Bengali release was the ghost film Goynar Baksho, avers, “No I don’t, but our folklore is full of dayaans and chudails. As a child even my mom (Aparna Sen) would scare me saying if ‘I don’t eat food, a dayaan will come and grab me. Though I don’t know the finer distinction of both, yes, both have long hair and are manifestations of evil.” Remind her that a case has been filed against the Ekta Kapoor film and she adds, “People take offense easily. I really like one thing what Ekta said now we will have aliens filing cases against us that we are denigrating them by making Krish. The bottom line is that dayaan’s don’t exist, period. Come on, we are trying to entertain you by making a scary film. Supernatural is making a comeback even abroad. We have films on vampires, zombies etc.” Finally before winding up, Konkona jokes, “When we have readymade stuff available of dayaans, rakshass etc, why should we not tap them?” Well said, Konkona!!!
