MUMBAI: Mahesh Shetty got immense recognition for his role as Jaywant Rane in Pavitra Rishta made him a household figure. He went on to feature in a few more episodes till his final television debut, Pyaar Ko Ho Jaane Do, eight years ago. Mahesh Shetty has since moved from the small screen to the internet and motion pictures. He hasn't given up on television, despite his absence from it.
Mahesh said, “I come from television. So, why would I be averse to the medium? After dedicating 10-12 years of my career to television, I realised the longer format can be draining and stifle creativity. If I am offered a finite show that gives me the scope to perform, I would be more than happy to return to the small screen. My break from TV was purely to push myself as an actor and explore new avenues. I just want to do good work, regardless of the medium.”
He added, “TV keeps actors on their toes, requiring them to be in their characters every day while delivering something new. Scripts may demand actions or scenes that don’t align with personal preferences, and there’s often little room for debate due to time constraints. The pressure of deadlines is what actually spoils the whole experience of TV. On the other hand, exploring other mediums allows an actor more time to study and immerse themselves in their characters.”
On challenges in the industry, Mahesh said, “Tell me one industry that is welcoming, not competitive, and lets you succeed without working hard for it. It’s the same in showbiz. So, why tag it separately? It is a competitive field, with many aspiring individuals fighting for a position or vying for a role. So, in that sense, entering the television industry was also an achievement.”
Mahesh concluded, “It’s no longer about big actors, but about content and performers. So, it’s quite a safe space for actors. If you’re good at your craft, there will be work for you. I am happy and eager to work on the projects I am being offered,” replies the actor, who will be seen in Kaan Khajura, Kolhapur Diaries, and a couple of South Indian projects. He adds, “I belong to Mangaluru and have always wanted to explore South Indian cinema. The scope for growth and innovation there is immense, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. Their unique scripts and anticipated films have taken the world by storm.”
