MUMBAI: Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar got married in 1984 and are regarded as an ideal pair because of their affection and respect for each other. Javed's children from his first marriage to Honey Irani are Farhan Akhtar, and Zoya Akhtar, who are also very close to Shabana. Shabana has been candid about her experience of not having children of her own in previous interviews; she handled this subject with incredible bravery and honesty.
Shabana discussed how her opinion of marriage and work was affected by not having children in a discussion with Simi Grewal in 2000. She said that although she had anticipated being unhappy that she would not become a mother, she was instead "amazed at the fact" that she had come to peace with the situation so quickly.
Shabana stated that while parenthood can be quite demanding, not having children allowed her to devote more time to her career and personal interests.
“Not being able to have children, in a sense, made the choices much easier because I could give so much more of my time because I think motherhood is very demanding,” she said.
When questioned about whether not having children was a “major disappointment,” Shabana shared her surprise at how easily she adapted. She had once believed that motherhood was a given privilege, but once she came to terms with her situation, she chose not to dwell on it.
“Once I realised I couldn’t have kids, I didn’t let it linger over and make me unhappy. I just packed my bags and carried on from there and was very grateful for many other things that I could do,” she added.
Shabana responded to a question about adoption with clarity, saying, “I never wanted to adopt a child. No.” She went on to say that having a close relationship with both Farhan and Zoya satisfied her need to interact with younger people. She valued their independence and their capacity for thought-provoking dialogue, which she found satisfying and rewarding.
When Shabana asked Farhan and Zoya how they felt about their father's marriage, she said that they were "too little" to have any real objections or concerns.
