World Tourism Day: Actresses share their views on how TV Shows and Movies Spark Our Desire to Explore New Destinations

As someone in the entertainment industry, I really believe our work plays a huge role in inspiring people to pack their bags and explore. Think about it—when you watch a movie or a TV show set in a breathtaking location, doesn’t it make you want to jump into the screen and experience that place for yourself? The way picturesque views are woven into storytelling has such a strong pull! It’s almost like you’re on an adventure alongside your favorite characters, and soon, you start imagining yourself there. I know that feeling, because I’ve experienced it too! The magic of storytelling and travel is that they both take you places—literally and emotionally. And it’s not just about international locations. Domestic tourism in India gets such a boost when people see the beauty of our country showcased in films and series. I definitely believe the audience gets lured by these views, and honestly, that’s the beauty of the entertainment industry. It’s a gateway to discovering new places, cultures, and experiences. I think I’m going to keep a travel bucket list that grows with every show I binge-watch!

The entertainment industry plays a huge role in promoting both domestic and global tourism. Movies, TV shows, and web series often showcase beautiful locations that can become travel hotspots. Whether it’s a scenic countryside, an exotic foreign land, or even a cultural or historical site, the visuals have a powerful impact. Audiences are naturally drawn to picturesque views, and it’s quite common for them to want to visit the places they see on screen. In fact, the term “film-induced tourism” has gained popularity in recent years, as people are inspired to travel based on what they watch. Personally, there have been many destinations I’ve either traveled to or added to my bucket list after seeing them on screen. One place I’ve always wanted to visit is Santorini, Greece, after seeing its stunning white-washed buildings and blue-domed churches in various films. Closer to home, the scenic beauty of Rajasthan, as showcased in films like Jodha Akbar and Padmavat, has sparked my desire to explore its historic forts and vibrant culture. The combination of tradition and natural beauty is irresistible! The entertainment industry doesn’t just provide escapism; it influences real-life travel decisions, making it a powerful driver for tourism.

I traveled to Europe after becoming a big fan of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge—it was on my to-do list. I finally made the trip in 2016. If given the chance, I would love to visit Paris again after watching Emily in Paris and experience some of the same things featured in the show. People are often influenced by pictures and sky views, and most of the time, they want to visit places they've seen in TV shows or movies. They make their bucket list based on that, so it really helps a lot.  The entertainment industry can contribute to both domestic and global tourism by providing enjoyable experiences and promoting these sectors. It can also help boost the economy of lesser-known destinations.

Traveling is truly a blessing, and I feel fortunate to have experienced it throughout my life. Growing up in a police and army family, I got to live in various places, and now, as a creative professional, travel continues to energize and rejuvenate me. What's even more special is the connection with my audience. Fans are always curious about the beautiful locations we visit, and they often want to experience them in person. In this way, we in the entertainment industry play a role in promoting both domestic and global tourism. I've traveled to many places across India and abroad, including the UAE, Hong Kong, and Bangkok. However, Switzerland and New York City are still on my list, and I hope to visit not just as a tourist, but to work and create something meaningful there.

The entertainment industry is a major contributor to travel and tourism. The way places are shot and portrayed on screen definitely motivates audiences to visit those locations. Some destinations or properties even invite filmmakers to shoot as a form of advertising, which, in turn, increases their visibility and clientele. For example, very few people knew about Corsica before Tamasha was filmed there. Similarly, Croatia has seen a rise in visitors after several locations were featured in Game of Thrones. Of course, the most famous example is Switzerland after Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge! I really want to visit Verona, Italy someday. I watched a movie called Letters to Juliet and have since wanted to visit the town where the famous love story of Romeo and Juliet is set. Although I had planned to go there last summer, my shoot schedules didn’t permit it. Hopefully next summer!
