Harman Baweja on Why Draft Film Policy Calls for Professionalism in the Industry

MUMBAI: Producer and writer Harman Baweja, who is embracing the legacy of Baweja Studios as a content-driven powerhouse, believes the new Draft Film Policy marks a defining moment for Indian cinema. Best known for Mrs. a critically acclaimed film that won multiple awards—Harman has steadily built a diverse slate across industries with projects like Khwaabon Ka Jhamela, upcoming films such as Dil Ka Darwaaza Khol Na Darling and Boys of Andaman, while also venturing into Tamil cinema with Perusu. Calling the policy a “much-needed push towards professionalism and accountability,” Baweja sees it as the framework the industry needs to move forward with discipline, safety, and respect.

The policy, recently unveiled for public consultation, highlights key reforms such as mandatory compliance with the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act on film sets, mentorship programs to nurture young talent, and the creation of a Film Development Council to streamline collaboration between industry stakeholders and government bodies.

Baweja, who has successfully repositioned Baweja Studios as a content-driven production house, believes the policy arrives at a turning point for Indian cinema. “ Policies like this are not restrictions; they are guidelines that will help the industry work with greater discipline, safety, and respect,” he said.

He further added a sensitive perspective on why the policy matters beyond just box-office economics: “Cinema is not just about stars and stories—it’s built on the shoulders of thousands of people who work tirelessly behind the scenes. A progressive film policy that ensures dignity, safety, and equal opportunity is not just necessary, it’s overdue. If we want our industry to grow globally, we must first take care of the people who make it possible.”

Baweja also emphasized how initiatives like mentorship programs and training workshops will shape the next generation of storytellers. “As producers, we have a responsibility not just to make films but to create an ecosystem where talent thrives. If India wants to truly compete on the world stage, we need structures in place that support creativity, good mass-appealing content while ensuring accountability.”

The policy also addresses regional cinema, co-productions, and incentives for international film projects in India, further strengthening the industry’s global positioning. Baweja sees this as a sign that Indian cinema is ready to move beyond just box-office numbers. “This is the time to invest in quality, discipline, and innovation. The Draft Film Policy gives us a framework to do exactly that.”

With producers like Harman Baweja backing the move, the conversation around the Draft Film Policy signals an important shift—one where professionalism becomes the bedrock of India’s cinematic growth story.

Under his banner Baweja Studios, he is steering a diverse slate of films and series that balance creativity with mass appeal. Captain India starring Kartik Aaryan, , Boy from Andaman, Dil Ka Darwaza Khol Na Darling, and a feature on the Shah Bano Case. With a strong focus on quality storytelling, fresh talent, and socially relevant themes, Baweja Studios is positioned at the forefront of India’s evolving film landscape.
