MUMBAI: Filmmaker and television personality Karan Johar recently spoke with raw honesty about his personal life, revealing the deep sense of loneliness he experiences despite his immense professional success.
In a candid conversation on a podcast hosted by tennis star Sania Mirza, Johar explained that while he has family and friends, nothing can fill the void left by the absence of a life partner.
Johar emphasised that he feels the most isolated not during times of struggle, but during his triumphs.
He recounted the moment he received the phone call informing him that he had won a National Award for his film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment).
He shared that after hanging up, his immediate thought was, "What do I do tonight? Whose house do I go to?
Whose hand do I hold? A little pat on the back, I needed and wanted to feel happy."
This feeling was compounded at the actual awards ceremony. When he arrived, he was asked who his 'plus one' was, and he realised, "I had no one.
Everybody was coming with their partners... and my kids were too young."
He admitted this experience "hits you hard" and serves as a stark reminder of his single status.
The filmmaker, who has spent nearly three decades creating some of the most memorable love stories in Indian cinema, admitted that domestic routines also amplify the loneliness.
He confessed, "I do get lonely and, on many nights when I am eating alone, I don't go to my dining table. I eat in my room so I can dilute the loneliness."
Johar has gone through phases of actively seeking love and companionship, experiencing heartbreak and one-sided affection, which he channelled into his work, such as the film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
However, he eventually reached a point of acceptance regarding his single status.
He quotes the classic song lyric, "Har Kisiko Nahi Milta Pyaar Yahan Zindagi Mai" (Not everyone gets love in life).
He also acknowledged the bittersweet irony of his life, concluding that, despite his wish for a partner, "Rab ne vo jodi mere liye nahi banayi" (God hasn't made a partner for me).
While he has come to terms with his single life and co-parents his twins, Yash and Roohi, with his mother, he confirmed he hasn't entirely closed the door on love.
He jokingly said that if love were to arrive, "my arms were wide open like Shah Rukh Khan's."
He also quipped about how annoying public displays of affection (PDA) are to him, stating he feels like "killing them" and telling them to "Please get a room!"
The director has been candid about navigating his personal journey, balancing his professional highs with the quiet reality of his life at home.
