Can you shed some light on Lokah 2?

“The scripting is currently underway, so it’s too early to reveal anything concrete. We haven’t locked the shooting schedule yet. The story will revolve around my character, and while I do know the broad narrative, it’s far too soon to discuss details.”

Despite strong content, why is the Malayalam industry still unable to produce big-budget films or expand its overall market?

“I don’t think every Malayalam film is a masterpiece—we make great films, but we also make some that don’t work, just like any other industry. Ultimately, filmmaking is a business. Only when the business grows can we take the risk of investing huge amounts in production.”

“We have to be extremely careful with finances. If we’re not confident about recovering the investment, we simply cannot afford to gamble on large budgets.”

“To be honest, only around 15% of Kerala’s population watches films in theatres. Compare that to the Telugu industry, where nearly 30% of the population goes to cinemas—that’s why their business is so big. For us to grow, more non-Malayalis must begin watching Malayalam films.”

Do you feel the situation will improve in the future?

“Absolutely. Things will improve with time. For now, we must continue making films on sensible budgets while keeping our creativity strong. Nothing can be taken for granted. We are putting in more effort to build a stronger, more sustainable business model for the Malayalam film industry.”

With an evolving filmography, an expanding pan-India fanbase, and a consistent commitment to powerful storytelling, Tovino Thomas remains one of Malayalam cinema’s most influential forces, shaping its future with every project he takes on.
