The film, directed by Nelson and produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures, has been embroiled in controversy due to its title. Another Malayalam film with the same title is slated for release around the same time, leading to concerns about potential confusion among audiences.
The Malayalam "Jailer" is a period thriller featuring Dhyan Sreenivasan and directed by Sakkir Madathil, with N K Mohammad as the producer. Despite the stark differences in their storylines, the creators of the Malayalam film have expressed concerns over the identical titles and have requested a title change, at least in the state of Kerala.
However, the makers of Rajinikanth’s film are not willing to change the title, even in just one state, according to Sakkir Madathil, who shared this issue in a press conference.
Sun Pictures, the production company behind Rajinikanth's 'Jailer,' issued an official statement stating that they cannot change the title as the film features a much bigger star and the company is a corporate entity. They believed that the title change would not impact the film's ticket sales.
The Malayalam film team argued that since they are making a smaller film, they should be allowed to keep the title, as they are already at a disadvantage. They also pointed out that the Tamil film “Jailer” stars Mohanlal, one of the biggest stars in Malayalam cinema, and changing the title would not impact its collections.
'Jailer' is a full-fledged action entertainer written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The film features Rajinikanth in the lead role. Jackie Shroff, Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah and Vinayakan are part of the supporting cast.
