I want to bring finite series back on TV: Sunjoy Wadhwa, CMD, Sphereorigins

Sunjoy Wadhwa, CMD, Sphereorigins

The mastermind behind Spehreorigins is a dreamer whose reams of reality and fantasy have been wonderfully translated into amazing shows on the small screen. Sunjoy Wadhwa, CMD, Sphereorigins, has transformed the production house into one of the biggies in the game.

The man, who has given a new dimension to storytelling on television, recently spoke with Tellychakkar.com about his journey, shows, success and many more.

Excerpts from his interview.

How will you sum up your long journey in the industry?

If I have to summarize my journey in the industry in one word, then I would say it has been a fruitful one. Whatever I have done in this industry, it has been an enriching experience for me. Thankfully, I have been able to achieve something through this journey.

What are the foremost qualities you look at when producing a show?

For me, content of a show is the most important factor that I keep in my mind while starting a new venture. I keep an eye on how different the content and the concept are and how differently, we as a maker, can portray it. We try to include something new in each of our shows.

You've been in the television industry for a long time. What are the changes you have seen? Any changes you want to bring in?

When I started, qualities of content were very high. There used to be enchanting tele-films and short stories. But with time, more value has been given to storytelling. And with so many projects coming up, there are lots of chances of storytelling and experimenting with new concepts. Personally speaking, I would really appreciate the finite series trend. I feel that serials should be given a dedicated timeslot, which will help makers and the channels to experiment with new concepts.

Balika Vadhu has broken all records to hit the highest number, was that ever the goal when you first launched the project?

Our dedication towards all the projects is the same. While some become iconic, some do not reach that place. Nevertheless, we put the same amount of effort in all our ventures. The basic concept for making such a series is to give back something valuable to our society. I remember when we completed 500 episodes we thought it to be a big achievement on our part. We never ever thought that Balika Vadhu would become such a huge hit amongst the audiences.

It is tough to sustain audiences’ interest for that long? What, according to you, gives Balika this much of love?

Yes, of course it is difficult to keep audiences glued to our shows for such a long span of time. Thankfully, we have been able to keep our viewers engaged and all the due credit goes to my writers. Even after few replacements in the daily, the writers have managed to keep the novelty of the characters intact, which I believe has worked successfully in our favour. Hats off to my writers!

Indian television has become more glamorous, bolder and bigger. Do you plan to produce such shows? Or you think social issues are more important than bold drama on small screen?

I never categorize shows in such ways. Rather I classify them as per their content. I am very choosy about the story. Hence, if a good story needs to be told in a bold fashion, I am ready to do it. Coming to social issues, except for Saat Phere, Balika Vadhu and Gangaa, none of the ventures are a conscious decision on my part to narrate stories on social issues.

What makes you unique from other producers in the industry?

The biggest plus point is that we make shows across all genres. We never create stereotype series. While we have love sagas like Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 2 and Piya Rangrezz on one hand, we also have social dramas like Balika Vadhu and Gangaa on the other. This, I believe, provides variety to the audience.

You are one of the most respected and renowned producer so would you like to try your hands at direction too?

Absolutely not (laugh). I am very happy with making content and building teams to do that. Hence, will continue to do that only.

With so many serials on floor, how do you manage them all?

All the credit goes to my team. Without them behind me, I would not have been managed to do so much in life. It is the intelligent, credible team of mine that makes an amazing organization and produces such beautiful shows.

Would you produce a reality show?

Currently, we are too busy with the fiction space, but I would love to do it someday. Hopefully soon…. we will be able to present something to our viewers.

What does success mean to you?

When people look up to you and they state that they want to work with you. When they appreciate your hard work that is definitely a moment of pride for me. For me, that defines success.

We wish Sunjoy all the best for his future endeavors.
