Byomkesh
Who can be better than this to start with? Adapted from the detective series of the same name Byomkesh Bakshi by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, talented actor Rajit Kapur essayed the role of the Bong detective. It was a cult series of early 1990’s and Kapur was highly praised for his character portrayal.
Karamchand
Another popular detective series of 1980’s Karamchand successfully strike the right chord with the masses. Pankaj Kapoor played the titular role in the first ever detective series on Indian television, with Archana Puran Singh and Sushmita Mukherjee as his assistant.
Inspector Bharat
Another DD National show that remained highly popular in the 90s was Suraag. Sudesh Berry starrer this series was about the CID inspector Bharat, who solved different cases with his assistant. Berry’s stellar performance made the series a talking point of the town.
Feluda
Here come another dashing and intelligent Bong detective, the brain child of Oscar winning director Satyajit Ray. Though Shashi Kapoor played the role of this ace detective, unfortunately he could not strike the right chord with the audience.
Inspector KC
What made it distinctive from other detective series was that a woman cop playing the lead as a CBI officer and chief of Homicide department in Saboot. And Anita Kanwal did a commendable job in her role.
Jasoos Vijay
Produced by BBC World Service Trust this T.V. series was a path breaking one as it not only showed crime stories but with every episode a social message was given. The show had a tragic ending with Jasoos Vijay diagnosed with HIV positive.
Krishna Arjun
This inseparable duo might not have been the best detective duo on Indian television but was highly popular during their time. The duo, who shared a love-hate relationship, was loved by the mass for their tom-jerry relationship. Hussain Kuwajerwala and Shraddha Nigam were probably the most stylist detectives on small screen.
ACP Pradyuman
The longest running crime drama series on Indian television, CID, is running for more than seventeen years. All the kids of 90’s have literally grown up watching the iconic three musketeers of the show namely ACP, Daya and Abhijeet, with ACP Pradyuman leading the entire team.
Aryan Khanna
One of the most intelligent detective series on Indian television, Special Squad, was the product of early 2000. Headed by bright and smart Aryan Khanna aka Bhanu Uday, this elite crime investigation bureau had few finest detectives including forensic experts and a criminologist.
