There are a very few TV shows that trigger memories and nostalgia of partition and Buniyaad is one of them. Buniyaad, meaning foundation, is a TV serial which aired on Doordarshan in the year 1986 – 93 and later on Sahara One in 2000-01. The show depicted the atmosphere of partition and the break-up of a large joint family.
The show was directed by Ramesh Sippy and Jyoti Sarup collectively. It was written by Manohar Shyam Joshi.
The popular series, which is one of the longest running shows in India, dealt with unfolding events related to partition and its aftermath. The plot revolved around the story of a Punjabi family that was affected by the tragedy of what was called the world’s largest mass migration in history, the Partition in 1947, and later, dealt with its aftermath over seven decades and multiple generations. The series had 104 episodes which gripped the nation. It had become an emotion to many television addicts during the late 80’s.
Buniyaad featured actors like Alok Nath as Master Haveli Ram, Kiran Juneja as Veerawaali, Anita Kanwar as Lajjo-ji, Sudhir Pandey as Lala Gaindamal, Asha Sachdev as Shanno and Kanwaljit Singh as Satyavir.
In an interview to a newspaper, Alok Nath told that the show was close to the hearts of many Indian masses which comprised of people who went through partition and the painful events during the traumatic events of partition.
The director required new faces for the portrayal of characters which required connecting with the audiences. The show opens with Master Haveliram and wraps up with the period when former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru died.
