Shows with new wave of content portraying women in a different light

MUMBAI: Movies or shows, women characters are often seen as the secondary leads or are the roles which revolve around the men in their lives. Most of the shows fail to portray the different facades of a woman and the daily struggles of their lives. The shows which are driven by women centric roles has started gaining popularity and we have seen the year 2018 dominated with a list of shows that celebrates women with an interesting story plot as the audience is just bored of watching male centric content.

Adulting

Dice Media's new web series titled Adulting is the story of two 20-something girls trying to take up the responsibility of being independent adults for the first time in the fast paced, urban bustle of Mumbai. Aisha Ahmed and Yashaswini Dayama play the lead roles portraying relatable moments and dealing with existential as well as mundane issues faced by young people such as managing money, social media validation, parental expectations, career conundrums and more.

This is also one of the web-series where the entire team has been mostly-female. Right from the director, writers, editor, principal cast, assistant director team, line producer, and several other key positions.

It's Not That Simple Season 2 - Voot

It’s Not That Simple returned with its Season 2 where Swara is seen as a newly divorced single mom trying to navigate a patriarchal world of gender bias and societal pressure. She struggles to find a balance between being a mother, building a successful career and finding love again while asking herself ‘Does the sex really matter?’ The show is directed by Danish Aslam and Season 2 stars Swara Bhasker alongside Sumeet Vyas and Purab Kohli.

The show debuted in 2016 with its first season portrayed Swara Bhasker as a woman stuck in an unhappy marriage alongside Vivan Bhatena, Akshay Oberoi and Karanveer Mehra. Meera, played by Swara Bhaskar a newly divorced single mother who battles social censure and the pressures of living in a world run by men.

Girl in the City – Bindaas

Girl in the City is a coming of age story of 21-year-old Meera from Dehradhun, who comes to the bustling city of Mumbai to pursue her dream in the fashion industry. The series follows misadventures of a young, aspiring fashion designer starring Mithila Palkar and Rajat Barmecha. The show already has 2 seasons and its recent comeback with season 3 has won hearts everywhere.

Love Lust Confessions – Viu

Revolving around the life of a young girl Poroma Sarkar, Love Lust and Confusion is the perfect show depicting the age of indecisiveness, physical exploration and the age of confusion. Love, Lust and Confusion is a series weaving comedy of errors and a coming of age story - with a gamut of confusions and perplexities, love and desires, choices and dilemmas mixed with an ensemble of lovable characters who depict today's confused selves of the millennials.

The show starring Rajat Barmecha and Tara-Alisha Berryalso explores the element of polyamory and depicts the perspective of youngsters towards it. The premise sets the stage for two people who meet each other at crossroads of their lives followed by a series of misadventures involving themselves and others

Dev DD - Alt Balaji

Dev DD is about a modern young woman trying her best to break stereotypes about how an Indian female is supposed to be. Conceptualised and produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, and directed by Ken Ghosh, the series stars Asheema Vardaan, Akhil Kapur, Sanjay Suri, Rashmi Agdekar, Rumana Molla, Sandeep Pandey and Sanjay Suri in lead roles. Dev DD is like a modernised version of Devdas where feminism, sexism, homophobia and a lot of other things society refuses to speak about are stressed upon.
