I have reached a point where I only watch porn and cricket - Cyrus Broacha

Cyrus Broacha

Time to see your favourite Cyrus Broacha back!

The funny VJ is all set with his new show Cyrus Says on Saavn, the audio entertainment streaming platform.

But before you head towards his show, here have a fun read at his crazy interview.

How excited are you to be back with such an interesting show?

I’m actually bewildered because I wanted to retire on my 44th birthday, but Saavn is giving us a chance for an extension and let’s see what happens next.

Tell us more about your show with Saavn originals?

The whole idea is to get to know people. I’m trying to bring the world closer. Ours is a globally connected world. We bring more people on, so more people can listen – it’s like six degrees of separation brought on by Saavn - and, no, I’m not trying to make a pun on six and Saavn here. But seriously, Cyrus Says, brought to you by the good folks at Indus Vox Media and Saavn,is an irreverent, comedy talk show, where I talk to people of repute from the world of cinema, art, sports, culture, politics, and F&B. You can catch the archived episodes and new episodes every Monday and Thursday, exclusively on Saavn.

Why do you think people will tune in to your show?

By mistake, for the most part. Accidents are a key thing in India. We have a population of 1.2 billion; most are accidents. Hopefully, some people will tune in to Saavn for Cyrus Says because they are tired of celebrities, and we have very few celebrities, for now. When we become big, we will have only celebrities because we are frauds.

Do you feel the trend of VJing has gone out?

Yeah we were just discussing this. I was doing some MTV events, and apparently the VJ’s are given very little bhav (weightage) these days. We were the last of the dinosaurs, and now it’s all about the reality TV. But this is a question for someone else – it’s not in my hands. I personally like it. I hate VJs. But I hate the idea of a parent telling another parent, “My son is a VJ.” It just doesn’t sound right when other parents say, “My son is an engineer, doctor, lawyer, or he works for an NGO,” and my parents say, “My son is a VJ,” especially when he is 47. My parents used to be very embarrassed at cocktail parties. You can’t say your son is a VJ!

What do you have to say about the current comedy stars on TV?

I only watch cricket, so, from there, Rameez Raja’s haircut is funny, Harsha Bhogle’s hair weave is funny, Sunil Gavaskar’s laugh is funny, and Navjot Singh Sidhu is funny - but not in a nice way. There is a lot of humour - some of the uniforms are hilarious. I think for the Rising Pune Super Giants, the uniform is hilarious. It looks like my darjee (tailor) did it with 7 colors of Benetton in a third-world country.

Who do you like watching?

I like watching porn. I cannot lie. I have reached a point where all I watch is porn and cricket, and now the two things are blurring.

I don’t get to watch much because I live in a joint family. I either have to watch Harry Potter with my daughter or Animal Planet with my father, or news channels with my mom. My wife goes to bed at 8 PM, so I’m prowling the night scene - in my hall with two maids, my kids, and a television. It’s not exactly a Jamaican paradise.

Given a chance would you like to get back Bakra?

Yeah, except I want to shoot only in winters. It was one of the hottest shoots I’ve ever been on. You are always on the road, feeling hot and sticky. This country needs to change its weather conditions if it wants Indians to live here, otherwise they will all leave. For the people who run this country, I say, “Change the weather, make the summer shorter, otherwise, everyone will leave. They are already leaving. There are 4 million Indians in England, 5 - 7 million in America, and couple of hundred in Canada. There are lots, so be careful. I have heard there are a few hundred in Bangladesh, but that was a travel agent who fucked up.”

Do you think the online trend of apps will catch up in India?

The answer is a maybe. “Will there be an India,” is the question.

In India when internet is still in the 'growing' phase how do you think web series will work?

As a producer and a visionary, I must say that Web series will make no money for 5 years. My prediction is that year 2022 will be the big year for Web series, in terms of finance and putting money on the table. For the next 4 - 5 years it will limp along like early porn in the 70’s where they didn’t get much return, but then in the 90’s they did and then they were washed out because of digital by 2000.  There will be another revolution, and Web series will also eventually get washed out. It’s the way of the world - you come, you are born, and then you die. It’s existentialism, the digital way.

Do you follow any international series?

I do. There is this guy called Rocco Siffredi. He has his own series. He is one of the most hardcore porn guys I know - I just like his style. I know everything about him. He is my hero.
