How did you get into acting?
I was always fond of acting and modeling. In fact, I grew up watching television serials and daily soaps. In college, I got into modelling and auditioned for Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi. I got selected and I got into television.
Beginning your career with a youth show like Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi, what made you change to daily soaps?
Kitni Mast… was a daily soap too but I was inclined to the regular daily soaps too. It has been six-and-a-half years now and I love it.
You have been a part of reality shows too. Which is better -- daily soaps or reality shows?
Reality shows are much better. They are less hectic than the daily soaps due to their duration. They last for two-three months. Also, reality shows give you a chance to be yourself unlike the daily soaps where you play a character and can hardly show the true ‘you’ to the viewers.
Your debut in Bollywood is happening with an item number in Rajneeti. How did it come about?
I just got a call from Prakashji (Jha) one day. He said he wanted me to dance in his film. I had rejected many offers earlier and initially, I wasn’t very sure about this too. However, Prakashji explained to me his requirement of a fresh Indian face who is also a good dancer. He also assured me it won’t be ‘just another item song’. I too got a good feeling about it as Rajneeti is a classy film and I agreed.
How was it working with a popular star cast and a renowned director?
It was nice. I was apprehensive and nervous in the beginning, but Ranbir (Kapoor), Prakashji and everyone else made me really comfortable and encouraged me.
Does this indicate your shift from television to films?
It’s too early to say anything now. I’ve just done a song and eagerly waiting for the response.
What kind of roles do you want to do in future?
I love to act. And I don’t want to be just an item girl. I want to take things as they come.
Tell us about your other projects.
Currently, I am playing a lead role in Sajan Ghar Jaana Hai on Star Plus. Apart from that, I still haven’t planned anything. I want to keep my prospects open after Rajneeti.
Any dream roles?
Too many! But specifically, I want to do Shah Rukh Khan’s role from Don. I want to be a ‘female Don’ (laughs). If I get a chance, I would love to do action roles.
Who’s that one person in the industry you want to work with?
I don’t want to sound too optimistic by saying I want to work with Yash Raj Films or Karan Johar. I mean everyone wants to work with them. But, I would love to work with Farhan Akhtar someday.
Tell us more about your personal life?
My life is great by God’s grace. I am happily married to Indraneil (Sengupta) for more than two years now. But I can’t spend more time with him due to our hectic schedules. He is busy with Bengali films and is out of town most of the times. So, I wish we could spend more time together.
