Aman Yatan Varma has had a controversial past. But not one to be bogged down Aman rose like the proverbial phoenix and went on to successfully host Indian Idol 2 besides doing shows like Sujata, Devi and a reality task based show Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao. Varma is currently in the news also on the personal front. The actor has a special someone in his life and if reports are to be believed she is an aspiring actress called Anketa whom he met on the sets of Sujata. With so much happening in his life it was about time we chatted up with the actor. And he spoke at length about his experience on the show, that special someone in his life and what the future holds for him. Why did you choose Iss jungle se mujhe bachao at this stage of your career? I am a very aggressive person and I tend to lose my cool at petty things. I can hit the roof in a matter of seconds and get physical. I was required to stay with 12 other contestants under the most trying conditions. I chose this show as I wanted to prove something myself. Staying for such long time with 12 contestants in a place where there is inadequate food plus not-so-good living conditions can make anyone crazy. Maintaining your dignity is therefore a big task. I had simply vowed not to lose my temper at any cost. I think I have achieved what I wanted to. How would you assess of the show? In such a format you can try to hold yourself for just a week and after that your true colours start surfacing. By the mid of the show, contestants started bitching and badmouthing each other. Honestly I had a complete different idea of this show. I thought that there will be dares and tasks that one will have to attempt but it turned out to be a little different. I erred by not finding out what we will do the rest of the day. We didn’t try to find out completely and they too didn’t tell us the complete concept. What have you made out of the contestants? Anaida was the one who always called a spade a spade. She spoke her mind and spoke the fact. Mona Vasu kept fluctuating from one stance to another. Marc Robinson conducted himself well on the show though he too started indulging into group-making. Akashdeep Saigal stunned us all with his behaviour. A gentleman wouldn’t abuse and yell at ladies. I am amazed as to why he didn’t fear for his image. I am sure just like the way I am receiving compliments from my well-wishers, he too is being assessed by the public. It is heard that you have someone special in life? I am definitely not single and I am seeing someone. The girl is from the industry and I would not like to say anything beyond this. Whenever I am with her I experience a lot of calm. She adds value to my life. I will introduce her to all when the time is right. Why didn’t you continue with India Idol though it has always been a hot property? I anchored Khulja Sim Sim four years ago. I want to associate myself with new concepts and not repetitive ones. Even a KBC which was hosted by Amitabh Bachchan couldn’t draw the same TRPs as it did in its first season with the same host. A show loses its sheen when it is repeated. The novelty of the show diminishes in a couple of years since its introduction. I hosted Indian Idol for two seasons and then I opted out as it was getting repetitive. When they narrated the concept of the show and said that it’s the Indian version of Americal Idol, I was sure that it would be a bigger hit than its parent shows. Following Indian Idol came Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Star Plus’ Voice Of India but nothing could come close to the success of Indian Idol 1. The seasons that followed the first season of Indian Idol too were not that popular. I have hosted shows that are new to the Indian audience like Zee Cinestars ki Khoj. Even in fiction I have tried to attempt variety. In Kumkum I played an obsessive lover and a nagging husband in Sujata. After having worked in two Balaji shows (Ghar ek mandir and Kyunki) why haven’t we seen you work with them any more? What’s your equation with Ekta Kapoor? I am very open to working with Ekta. In fact I met her a few days ago over a project and you never know I may soon be working with her. There never was a problem with Ekta and there never will be any problem with her. What do you enjoy more- hosting or acting? I enjoy doing both. In acting I have to portray someone else but hosting is all about my personality. I am myself while hosting. What do you watch on television? I don’t watch anything on television except for AXN as I don’t think I can watch anything on TV. I am hooked on to America’s funniest videos and So you think you can dance. What next on the professional front? Nothing much. Currently I am looking for work.
