Anurag Kashyap is a name that silences even the biggest Bollywood cynics. This week on Bollywood Storytellers, the maverick director talks to Zoom about his desperation to be a part of Indian film industry and succeeding on his own terms. While his directorial debut Paanch did not see the light of day, films like Dev D, Gulaal, Black Friday and the Gangs of Wasseypur series have cemented Anurag Kashyap as a storyteller with the power to excel in unconventional mainstream cinema.
Despite his initial struggle, Anurag did not bow down and conform to the verdict of the industry. He stuck to his guns and went about making movies that have come to define him. With his realistic presentation of edgy films, Anurag has carved out a niche for himself in Bollywood with a loyal fan following.
In his own words, Anurag believes his passion drove him to action, without thinking about the consequences. After Paanch had no takers, Anurag went on to make Black Friday, which won him a lot of accolades.
Dev D, his contemporary depiction of Sarat Chandra’s classic Devdas, earned him recognition from audiences and critics. From here on things started falling in place. With films like Gulaal, The Girl in Yellow Boots and Gangs of Wasseypur to his credit, Anurag has made his mark in the industry without succumbing to the predefined norms of Bollywood.
Watch this episode with Anurag Kashyap narrating the tale of his journey of making it big in the industry on his own terms on Zoom’s Bollywood Storytellers on Monday 29 October 2012.
