Ashiesh Roy is 'every child's favourite' in Disney's Goldy Ahuja Matric Pass

Ashiesh Roy in Goldy Ahuja Matric Pass

Ashiesh Roy is on an unprecedented career high these days, and for a good reason too. The actor who was till recently languishing in the Sony TV show ‘Hum Hain Naa’, has now bounced back with two new shows. No wonder then, that you find him grinning from ear-to-ear these days.

He is especially excited about his Disney show Goldy Ahuja Matric Pass, which came on air last month. “It’s an unusual show in more than one way. Firstly, the hero Goldie Ahuja (Ashwin Kaushal) is a 40 year old high school dropout, who is on a quest to pass the 10th standard. Goldie enrolls in the same school where his son is his classmate and his wife, his class teacher. As it turns out, his arch-nemesis Ganguly, who he used to bully as a child, is now his professor, and is determined not to let him pass! We follow Goldie and Ganguly’s adventures and find out why Goldy wants to become a Matric Pass!”

The storyline in itself is unusual and novel. And the team has worked really hard to make the it funny yet realistic. “Indian audiences largely connect comedy with buffoonery, spoofing and slipping-on-the-banana-peel kind of stuff. Goldy Ahuja Matric Pass, on the other hand is mostly a verbal comedy. We largely play on words, and try to bring out the humour from the situations themselves. And that has hit a chord with the audience,” explains Ashiesh.

No stranger to comedy, Ashiesh admits that he was not sure of how the final product will turn out. “This is the first non-GEC (General Entertainment Channel) show that I am doing, and besides that, I was just coming off a hugely successful show Jeannie Aur Juju, where my Bengali character Chatur had become immensely popular. So playing another Bengali character Ganguly posed a huge challenge for me. I had to make sure of not repeating anything from my previous role. David (creative and series director) and I worked really hard on my character traits, and I’m glad to say that the end result has been wonderfully different and effective. I’m led to believe that young audiences like me on the show. And that is like the Filmfare Award for me, as far as I’m concerned.”

Rounding off, Ashiesh says that he is especially delighted that only after 4 episodes telecast, the show has unanimously become the number 1 show on the channel, and has now become a bi-weekly, and been granted an extension of 26 episodes!

“This means more hard work, less sleep and double the concentration on scripts,” declares Ashiesh. “But we’re up for it. We are in no mood to give up our No. 1 spot easily!”

Keep going with you high energy levels, Ashiesh!!
