MUMBAI: Indian public absolutely love to dwell amid drama, be it in real life or through reel-life's portrayal. For this reason, so many Hindi and regional shows are such massive hits delivered before the audience till date, which has a high drama and action quotient for sure!
Till the '00s decade, it was seen that the TRP ratings for shows highly relied on general concepts that were greatly cherished by the average Indian families like saas-bahu drama, thriller and/ or horror shows. However, the popularity of the saas-bahu drama still seems to remain unfazed despite the introduction of various other themes, concepts and genres.
It was only in the last decade that the audience witnessed a gradual shift of content's focus from mainstream entertainment to other sorts like action-packed storylines, visuals and audit clarities, special effects, realistic approach towards the content with emphasis on visual details virtually, etc. This significance on visuals and clarity led to major changes and transformations amid the entertainment industry. A character's body-language, gestures and even their thematic costume patterns underwent massive changes and adaptations suitable for the modern crowd, with a touch-up of the basics.
Star Plus' Mahabharat 2013 was a revolutionised and a realistic display of the Indian epic series Mahabharat. The action sequences and the unimaginably realistic VFXs added the extra appeal to the show, thus, making it easily acceptable for the modern audience, who are already into sci-fi movies and their visual satiety lies upon the realistic display of VFX-supported action sequences.
After that, many Hindi supernatural shows came up using ultimate VFXs to portray the same old dramatic sagas, but with a more realistic visual treat. Yes, we are talking about shows like Daayan, Naagin and so many more that had followed or are following the same theme. The common fact about these shows is that their producers have taken up local folklore and blended their roots in the modern world scenarios to elevate the drama-quotient of the entire show. Surprisingly, this technique has worked wonders for the entertainment industry.
Today, let's take a note of the most popular supernatural shows of the Hindi telly world that has set the standards of this industry's future supernatural shows even higher:
1. Naagin (Seasons 1 to 5)

Starting-off with Balaji Telefilm's classic and most-beloved supernatural show that topped the TRP charts (in terms of both ratings and popularity), Naagin series is the sweetheart of all supernatural shows so far, owing to the involvement of a stellar cast-line up, right from it's first to it's 5th installment. Featuring the most popular television stars like Mouni Roy, Hina Khan, Arjun Bijlani, Surbhi Jyoti, Nia Sharma, Rajat Tokas, Surbhi Chandna, Sharad Malhotra, etc. in it, Naagin accelerated on immense popularity and added too that were the super-crazy action scenes, an even crazier VFX usage and storyline supported by mysterious folklores regarding a shape-shifting female serpent, that tickles one's curiosity. It's first episode aired on 2015 and the show wrapped-up this year's February itself. It aired on Colors TV.
2. Nazar

This show aired on Star Plus and actress Monalisa's character of the Daayan grabbed all eyeballs, literally side lining the roles of the protagonist couple's. Despite following a crazy storyline which counted ET characters in existence, actress Monalisa completely owned the show on her own terms as the Daayan. The iconic feature of her character was definitely that long black rapunzelish-kind of hair braid that wriggled freely in the air like a snake and could also be used by the monstress as a gripping-weapon. Also, the Daayan's yellow eyes were too gripping to be missed. Special mention goes to the lead actress' one-time Medusa inspired look when her open hair turned into snakes attached to her head. Hats-off to the graphics and the VFX engineers of this show.
3. Yeh Jaadu Hai Jinn Ka

This show was based on a Muslim folklore. However, it had kind of a fairytale-ish approach to the entire scenario by involving fairies, wizards and evil witches. The plot also had dreamy as well as dark sequences that added contradictory appeal to it's visualities, that was easily approaching for the audience, who also relied on the show to end on a 'happily-ever-after' at the end, which it eventually did! Eye-catching moments, the lead couple's fairytale-like chemistry, epic character transformations and the realistic featuring of the moon.
4. Kuch Toh Hai - Naagin Ek Naye Rang Mein
[[{"fid":"15669459","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"4":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":720,"width":1280,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"4"}}]]
This was the spin-off show of Naagin, that tried to incorporate new characters like vampires and werewolves alongside their authentic shape-shifting serpent's legacy. However, the highly anticipated show could not feed the expectations of it's audience and hence is set to go off-air anytime soon.
5. Divya-Drishti
[[{"fid":"15669469","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"5":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":360,"width":640,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"5"}}]]
This story's plot revolved around the estranged relationship between two lost sisters who yielded supernatural powers by the grace of Lord Shiva and finally united as a family post-getting married in the same house. Later, their partners were also revealed as supernatural power-bearers. However, this Star Plus' show gained momentum for the creepy and haunting vibes of the shows villain (a witch named Pishachini), who's character was played by renowned actress Sangeeta Ghosh. Special mention for this show definitely goes to the creepy transformation of actress Mansi Srivastava, who's on-screen character Lavanya could shape-shift into a demonic lizard.
6. Kaal Bhairav Rahasya
[[{"fid":"15669479","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"6":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":518,"width":920,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"6"}}]]
