MUMBAI: As the world celebrates World Music Day on June 21, actor and classical dancer Harleen Kaur Rekhi, known for her work in Shrimad Ramayan and the theatre production Hamare Ram, opens up about the quiet yet powerful role music plays in her life.
"I totally believe that music is something that uplifts your mood, boosts your morale and confidence. Your emotions can go high or low depending on the kind of music you're listening to,” says Harleen, explaining how music has shaped her everyday energy and mindset.
But for Harleen, the connection runs even deeper. As a trained Kathak dancer and actor, music has been a constant presence through her creative journey. “Music, for me, is also deeply connected to my journey as a Kathak dancer and an actor. While learning kathak and after also the rhythm, the taal—everything classical—kept me grounded.”
She adds, “It plays a vital role in my life because I relate everything around me to music. To me, everything has music—the air, the wind, the birds, everything in nature has a rhythm.”
When it comes to singers who have left a lasting impression, Harleen is quick to name her all-time favorite: Sonu Nigam. “He has such a melodious voice. I remember he sang in our play Hamare Ram, and the way he performed—it truly resonated with people.”
What strikes Harleen the most about Sonu Nigam’s singing is the emotional imagery it creates. “His singing carries a sweetness and a certain emotional depth. I can literally visualize whatever he sings. Even if he’s singing about something like rain, I can instantly connect with the visuals and emotions he evokes. That’s the kind of impact his voice has on me.”
In both her acting and her dance, Harleen continues to draw energy and inspiration from music—making it not just a background element, but a living rhythm that shapes her day-to-day life.
