'Indian Idol'Tamang to act in Nepali movie

After Abhijit Sawant and Meiyang Chang, it's Indian Idol 3 winner Prashant Tamang's turn to face the arclights. The 26-year-old from Darjeeling is in the headlines for starring in a Nepali film Gurkha Paltan (The Soldier Brigade). Tamang, who became a youth icon in Nepal, is shooting in Palpa district (central Nepal). Nepali singer Narayan Rayamajhi is directing the film and it's his debut too. It is a story of young Nepali men who are forced to join foreign armies for want of opportunities in their own country and the hardships they undergo.

It is a story of young Nepali men who are forced to join foreign armies for want of opportunities in their own country and the hardships they undergo. Rayamajhi wanted actors with an army background and Tamang suited the bill. The Idol singer plays the role of Nirman, a fatherless boy who is forced to join the British Army to take care of his mother and sister. Interestingly, the story of the film seems to be straight out of Tamang's real life as he lost his father at the age of eight and had joined the West Bengal police force when he was just 18 in order to look after his mother and sister. One of the recent scenes that he shot includes the return of Nirman to his village on leave when he gets married to a girl from the village, played by Nepali actress Ranjita Gurung. Tamang was to make his debut inspired by his real life in another debutant Nepali director Dinesh Raj Sharma's film but the project is yet to go on floors. Tamang remained unavailable. Looks like Tamang has found an alternative career.
