MUMBAI: In a surprising turn of events, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have named Rajat Patidar as their captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, following speculations that Virat Kohli might return to lead the side.
With Faf du Plessis being released ahead of the mega auction, RCB were in search of a new skipper.
Initial reports suggested that Kohli, the franchise’s former leader, was a prime candidate for the role. However, wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma has now shed light on why Kohli turned down the opportunity.
Speaking on the matter, Jitesh revealed that Kohli had no intention of reclaiming the captaincy.

“Virat bhai did not want to lead the side,” he stated. While Jitesh was aware that Patidar was under consideration for the captaincy, he only received official confirmation when RCB made the announcement on social media.
“I found out about Rajat Patidar becoming the captain at the same time as everyone else. But when you've been in and around the game for some time, you understand how things work,” Jitesh remarked.
Interestingly, Jitesh later revised his statement, speculating that Kohli’s reluctance to take on the captaincy role stemmed from the fact that he has been away from leadership duties for four years. Kohli last captained RCB in the 2021 season before stepping down from the role.
RCB will now embark on their IPL 2025 campaign under Patidar’s leadership, with their first fixture set against reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on 22nd March 2025.
Fans eagerly await the action as a new era begins for the Bangalore-based franchise.
