MUMBAI: Anupam Bhattacharya plays the character of Shashwat Sengupta in Ishani, Star Plus show Jhanak's spin-off, opposite actress Megha Chakraborty. In an exclusive chat with TellyChakkar, Bhattacharya opened up on taking a break from TV and mentioned that his character in Ek Hazaron Mein Meri Behna Hai had minimum scope.
Anupam said, "Ek Hazaaron Mein... was a very popular show, but my character had limited scope, which didn’t quite justify my calibre as an actor. After that, I became extremely critical about taking up television projects. I’ve always gravitated toward roles with more depth and drive, like the ones I played in Durgesh Nandinii, Pyaar Ki Yeh Ek Kahani, and Ishq Subhanallah."

He added, "That’s why I decided to take a step back from TV and explore other mediums like OTT, films, and advertisements. I’ve done films like Khatta Meetha, The Body, TE3N, Farrey, shows like Leila and Stories of Rabindranath Tagore on Netflix, and over 100 ad films. Honestly, I can't say TV has evolved drastically, but it still offers undeniable reach, recall value, and popularity if you take on the right kind of roles."
When asked if he feels the shelf-life of TV shows are short and uncertain, Anupam said, "There’s definitely a lot of uncertainty when it comes to a TV show’s longevity. The pressure to perform is extremely high, and this uncertainty can affect an actor’s career. Good roles are hard to come by, and the cut-throat competition can drown you into oblivion. I’ve experienced that firsthand, which is why I opened up to exploring other mediums, as I mentioned earlier."
