Krutika Desai on Dahi Handi celebrations: If I get the chance to break the matki, I'll happily do it

MUMBAI: It's the day of joy and song—'Govinda Aala Re Aala Zara Matki Sambhal Brijbala!' As we celebrate Lord Krishna, the Makhan Chor, actress Krutika Desai, who plays Dhara in Sun Neo's Saajha Sindoor, fondly recalls her own Dahi Handi celebrations from back in the day.

Reminiscing about Dahi Handi celebrations, Krutika Desai shared, “I remember when I was about 5 or 6 years old, my mom had a shop where people celebrated Gokulashtami by playing Dahi Handi. They even lifted me up to climb and join in the fun, making me feel like a part of the team, even at such a young age. That feeling of being part of the celebration has stayed with me ever since!”

She added, “I absolutely love the decorated dahi handi, especially the ones made of mud, filled with homemade curd, and adorned with Ashoka leaves and marigold flowers—it always excites me. And even though I'm a girl, if I get the chance to break the matki this year, I'll happily do it!"

Opening up about the celebrations this year, the Saajha Sindoor actress shared, “This year, we’re shooting during Janmashtami and Dahi Handi, but we've already celebrated Independence Day, Rakshabandhan, and Friendship Day on set. We're celebrating Janmashtami with traditional treats like rabdi and dahi.”

Lastly, sharing her love and devotion for Lord Krishna and his teachings, “To me, Janmashtami is all about celebrating Kanha ji. In our region, we worship Thakur ji, the elder form of Krishna Bhagwan, as our main deity. Janmashtami fills the air with happiness.  For me, every actor should connect with their audience, and the teachings of Krishna Bhagwan, especially about Karma and Dharma, have deeply influenced me. I always strive to do my best, be honest, and follow the path of truth. The Bhagavad Gita and its shlokas continue to resonate with me, even in my early 30s.”

On the work front, Krutika Desai plays the role of Dhara in Sun Neo’s Saajha Sindoor opposite Sahil Uppal, who is seen as Gagan. Saajha Sindoor, airing on Sun Neo, follows Phooli (Stuti Vinkle), a young woman marked as an unmarried widow after her groom dies on their wedding day. As Phooli navigates her fate's trials, viewers are left wondering how destiny will shape her journey and those around her. The show features a stellar cast including Sangita Ghosh, Sahil Uppal, Neelu Vaghela, and Krutika Desai in pivotal roles.
