MUMBAI: It’s not a great time for comedians it seems as first it was Samay Raina who found himself into a deep controversy regarding his show India’s Got Latent and now it’s Kunal Kamra but in this case, well, Kunal Kamra has a little more experience as he has already dealt with a similar controversies over the years.

Kunal Kamra is a comedian known for his political satire and the kind of criticism that always attracts wrong attention. When talking the times he got into controversies or went viral, we cannot forget about January 2020 when he confronted journalist Arnab Goswami on an IndiGo flight and asked him about his journalism.

Once again, Kunal Kamra has made it to some major headlines as he is under investigation for potential defamation after a satirical performance that targeted the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde. It started after the comedian posted a parody song on his Instagram account. In the song, he referred to Shinde as a ‘Gaddar’ (traitor). This was pointed towards his 2022 political realignment that led to the collapse of the previous state government.

The parody performance did not be digested by the members of Shinde’s party and as a result, the Habitat Comedy Club became a victim of vandalization by 20 Shiv Sena supporters as it was where Kamra had performed. Later, 10 individuals connected to the incident, including Rahul Kanal (the leader of Shiv Sena’s youth faction) were arrested.

Here’s where things get rocky – Kunal Kamra remained unapologetic and i one of his Instagram stories, he stated, “I don't fear this mob and I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down.” He even shared an image of himself holding the Indian Constitution, emphasizing his commitment to free expression. This got the nation talking and debating about ‘Freedom of Speech’.

While there are many actors giving out their opinion on the matter, there’s Mohit Parmar from one of the most popular running Hindi TV shows, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, giving out his opinion on the matter.

When asked to Mohit Parmar what he thinks about the matter and whether he thinks if it’s a propaganda or is it really a matter of free speech, Mohit Parmar mentioned that there is a thin line between Freedom of speech and being disrespectful. Mohit said, “Free speech aur disrespect mein fark hota hai. Free speech aur disrespect mein ek thin line hoti hai jo aapko pata hona zaruri hai. Agar aap Kunal Kamra ki purani videos bhi utha ke dekhlo, jab Kangana Ranaut ke office pe bulldozer chala tha toh he was happy jab uske khud ke office mein tod phod hui tab (he thought) ke aisa kyu hua. Toh mere according toh yeh fir hypocrisy jaisi baat hui. Jab kisi aur ke saath hua toh you are happy, jab aapke saath hua toh you are criticizing others. Yeh mera view hai.”

Mohit Parmar, who rose to fame for his previous show Pandya Store, is now winning hearts with his performance in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai as Abhir. It is remarkable to see an actor getting such a response for playing a grey shade. The audience is truly hooked to his storyline involving Charu and Kiara.
