Many women younger than me are also essaying roles of a mother on TV - Shweta Gautam

Shweta Gautam is satisfied playing the role of a mother in Star Plus’ Ek Nanad Ki Khushiyon Ki Chaabi...Meri Bhabhi. Says Shweta, “Kamini is a typical North Indian traditional woman for whom divorce is off the table. Her life revolves around her children Kritika (Esha Kansara) and Kunal (Ravish Desai). Her biggest grouse today is that Kritika’s sister-in-law Shraddha (Kanchi Kaul) has come back to her parents’ house and with that her life is no longer the same. She is also insecure about Kunal’s equation with Shraddha too, who according to her, is the root cause of all the trouble in the Shergill house.” According to the actress, the biggest challenge that she faced while playing Kamini was to mouth those run-of-the-mill (ghisa pita) dialogues. “For in real life, I am a modern independent woman for whom marriage and divorce is not the end of life. Similarly, if a girl comes back to her parents’ house after a failed marriage, it is fine. But as Kamini I need to oppose all these modern norms and at the same time appear convincing,” she observes. Shweta, who has been playing a mother’s role for a while now beginning with Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam, says that she has no issues looking older then her age as most TV mothers today are quite young. “From a realistic point of view I don’t look a mother of a girl of twenty one, but I guess it’s fine from my career’s point of view as many women younger than me are also essaying roles of a mother. One good thing about Kamini is that she is not only playing the mother of one of the female leads (Kritika) but of the male lead (Kunal) as well. This gives me a lot of scope to display different emotions,” Shweta maintains. Talking about her journey in the television space, Shweta informs, “I have had a nice TV journey when initially I got to play a daughter in Zee TV’s shows like Gharana and Basera with Alok Nath as my dad. Then I played the good and bad daughter-in-law, bhabhi in Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann and Ranbir Rano respectively. Ideally I would have preferred the latter as I fit that age group but then I need to be practical as well and follow the norm.” Before bidding us goodbye, Shweta adds that she was lucky to have got a break from the normal family drama when she got to play a cameo in the recently launched Mahabharat on Star Plus. “I play Sudarma, the good queen of Gandhar who is mother of Gandhari and Shakuni. She is very unhappy that her husband has got her daughter married to the blind Dhritarashtra,” the actress concludes.
