Varunn Jain who plays Mohit, the selfish younger son of the Rathi family in the hit Star Plus show Diya Aur Baati Hum has no problems with the fact that that the plot emphasis is not on him at the moment. “For the next two or three months the tracks will centre around my bhabhi Sandhya (Deepika Singh) finally becoming an IPS officer, which is the essence of our story.” “I have been promised something meaty by my creative team and writers and am patiently waiting for the same. I will never leave this Shashi Sumeet Productions show which has given me name and fame. I am sure if not now, sometime down the road my association with Diya Aur Baati Hum will surely earn me rich dividends.” Prior to Diya Aur Baati, Varunn was the lead in the Star Plus late night show Kaali Ek Agni Pariksha, which sadly did not do well on the ratings front and was taken off air in 2011. “I really liked that show. It was the only daily I knew that men would watch. I don’t want to comment on ratings, but I got lots of positive audience reaction. One of the big reasons for its premature exit was the 11 pm slot and issues with the production house (Fox Television Studios). There was a proper story for one more year as well.” Here Varunn added, “I guess Kaali’s theme of taking on the debased political system was a bit ahead of its time, for soon the anti graft movement will become the talk of the town with Anna Hazare hitting the streets demanding the Jan Lok Pal bill. The same middle class angst continues to burn even today.” In closing Varunn could not help but quip, “A lot also depends on execution, for after us one more Kaali – Ek Punar Avatar came along based on the similar theme, but that too did not become a rage despite being aired at the height of the Anna agitation.” Truly said, Varunn!
